Just a few days ago Emma Roberts was spotted reading a copy of Delirium by Lauren Oliver.

Now it is official, according to EW, Emma will be playing the lead character in the pilot set to be adapted by Fox.

The books take place in an alternative present-day Maine when civilization has been partly destroyed by war and a totalitarian government teaches that love is literally a disease (commonly called the delirium). There’s a surgical cure for love that’s mandatory for citizens 18 and older. Roberts will play Lena, a 17-year-old girl who is waiting for the cure. However things change for Lena once she meets a boy from the Wilds who has not taken the cure. Together they forge their own path trying to decide just how much the government should control in one persons life.

Roberts previously starred on the small screen in the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous then went onto big-screen roles including the upcoming Empire StateWe’re the Millers, and Scream 4.

Karyn Usher (Prison Break) wrote the pilot and is an executive producer alongside Peter Chernin, Katherine Pope, Paula Mazur and Mitchell Kaplan on the 20th Century Fox TV project.

There is no word yet on who will play Lena’s best friend Hanna or the love interest Alex. Who do you think can fill these pivotal roles?

I actually like her as an actress, so I’m excited to see her in this.

    Excellent choice.

I absolutely love her and I belive she will be an amazing Lena.

  • Lotte

    No. No. No. No. No.

I love this book and dislike her immensely as actress. First time I understand the frustration when people are just hating the choice of an actor/actress for a literature figure.

Wow, a casting choice for a role that I actually agree with! But, Delirium doesn’t take place in Oregon, does it?

    • Amanda M

LOL I was about to comment about this. As a Mainer, it’s sad that people so often forget there are two Portlands ;) It takes place in Maine, not Oregon!

I actually used a description given and didn’t double check even though I;’ve read teh book fixing now! sorry about that

I like the idea of book being turned into television shows only if they are true to the book. I haven’t read the Vampire Diaries, but I’m sure the series should have ended awhile ago (correct me if I’m wrong).

I think that if a book is turned into a movie there would be more time to develop characters in a way that is similar to the book. However, there needs to be a point where the show ends. I employ the mini series mantra.

For example, they could have made the Hunger Games into a mini series. They could have had 26 episodes per book, which would have left time for the small moments throughout the book, but still develop it nicely.

Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE the Hunger Games movie and will love the sequel. I can see the downside/upside to t.v./movie adaptations to books.

Re: TVD… Not necessarily. The show is only loosely based on the books, and at this point they are so different that I view them as completely different entities There are ten books in the entire novel series (so far) so even if they had kept with the original plot of the books, they probably wouldn’t be done. But either way, the show is basically on its own tangent (and, IMHO, much better than the books).

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

Why her??? With so many other actresses out there, she’s not talented and she’s not even that pretty. I loved the book, now I’m gonna have to suffer watching her. Didn’t she ruin enough movies already??

Although “pretty” is subjective, I like that she’s not LIKE OMG SUPER-HOT SEXY GORGEOUS because Lena never was meant to be. In fact, she looks relatively how I pictured Lena to look.

…that being said, I hate Emma Roberts as an actress >_< lol

I still can’t really see Delirium as a T.V. show

  • TheFirst

I love the book and now that Emma’s cast I’m sure this show will be awesome! :) I really, really hope this (or The Selection) gets picked up!

  • Inez

    Chris Zylka should play Alex

Why does every book have to be turned into a movie/show???
