The cast and crew of Star Trek Into Darkness have done an incredible job keeping the villain that Benedict Cumberbatch is playing a secret, that is until now. Entertainment Weekly may very well have spoiled the surprise with a headline on their webpage which has revealed his character (spoilers ahead).
Despite Benedict Cumberbatch repeatedly denying that he is playing the well known villain, a new Entertainment Weekly webpage headline has revealed that the actor may not be playing John Harrison as has been reported, but will instead be playing Khan. Click on the image below to check it out in full size, which is a screenshot taken directly from the website to see the character reveal:
If you go to the webpage itself, a keen eye will also net you a glimpse of the URL which clearly states “Kirk and Khan” as well. Now, this could simply be a mix up over at EW, but we have a feeling that considering they’ve had exclusives with the cast and crew recently and Star Trek Into Darkness actors Chris Pine and Benedict Cumberbatch are featured on their current issue, they most likely slipped up and revealed what villain we were all honestly hoping to see in the Star Trek sequel.
In case you’re unfamiliar with the character, Khan Noonien Singh is a fictional villain in the American Star Trek science fiction franchise, who was portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán. The character first appeared in the episode “Space Seed” (1967), a first season episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, and would reappear as an antagonist in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters May 17, 2013.
Update: EW has now updated their headline from Kirk & Khan to Kirk & Spock. This could mean they originally made a mistake with their headline, or it could mean that the studio noticed the flub and asked them to fix the headline immediately. Notice though that the URL still has Khan within the link. We’ll update you if new information is released.
Update 2: EW has now updated their headline and removed the character names entirely.
