Pretty Little Liars showed Spencer (Troian Bellisario) unraveling and in its eighteenth episode of season 3, “Dead to Me,” dealt with the discovery of Allison’s (Sasha Pieterse) Beach Hottie. What follows is a recap, so naturally spoilers are included from this episode.

Aria (Lucy Hale) and Hanna (Ashley Benson) worry about their possible jail time since they have items from Ali’s grave. Meanwhile Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) is resisting Hanna’s efforts to visit his aunt and uncle and grab his things before he moves to Australia. Spencer continues to be on her private investigator’s case to discover the mysterious door that the key fits in.

Emily (Shay Mitchell) goes back to the police station to once more find the picture of Detective Wilden (Bryce Johnson) at Cape May. It seems like she suspects that he is Allison’s Beach Hottie, the one who possibly impregnated her. The postcard is of course missing but her mother discovers a postcard that Ali sent her of Paris with a note in French. Emily goes to Spencer who is better at French than she is to translate the note. It says, “Stop digging. The police already know it’s you that’s capable of murder.”

Emily is confused by the note and tries to help Spencer move forward from her breakup with Toby (Keegan Allen). To try to sort out her own confusion, Emily decides to visit Dr. Sullivan (Annabeth Gish) as Hypable previously previewed.

Hanna talks with Caleb’s uncle Jamie about his dad abandoning him. Meanwhile, Emily is in a hypnotic state of mind as Dr. Sullivan gets her to relay the events of the night of the lighthouse. Aria and Wesley (Gregg Sulkin) play house as he continues to be plagued with silent phone calls. Instead of remembering the night of the lighthouse, Emily sees the night Allison was killed and thinks that she murdered her friend. Hanna and Jamie continue their heart to heart as Emily freaks out after her therapy appointment.

Pretty Little Liars shows fans a cute moment of Ali planning a trip to Paris with Emily as seen by the cute postcards. Emily feels guilty and is unsure of who she is anymore despite her mother’s reassurances.

Spencer meets with her P.I. who tells her where the door is but advises her to move on. Do you think Spencer needs to move on from Toby or do you still hold on to hope that they will work out?

Wesley punches his physics teacher’s husband after he accosts Wesley and Aria in the street. Wesley attempted to get kicked out of prep school in order to escape his mom so he hit on the physics teacher. Wesley gets some major points as he compliments Aria saying, “You’re the most amazing part of this.” It seems like while he’s on academic suspension, Pretty Little Liars fans might see a new relationship develop.

Hanna gives Caleb the picture of him as a baby that Jamie gave her. Hanna suspects that Jamie was the one in the picture and knew Caleb for longer than he said. As previously seen from Hypable stills, Mona (Janel Parrish) stops by Dr. Sullivan’s office with a lovely orchid. Do you think that there’s a bug in the orchid? Spencer opens the mysterious room only to find it empty.

Hanna, Aria, and Emily wait with Jason (Drew Van Acker) at the mausoleum to remember Ali when Spencer shows up. She reveals to Jason that not only was Ali pregnant but that they suspect Detective Wilden was the father. Emily thankfully remembers that she did not murder Ali but rather her memory was of digging up the grave site. She remembers a blonde woman in a red coat in charge. Hanna speculates that maybe it was Ali. The episode ends with Spencer scratching Toby’s name onto his mother’s mausoleum spot. Not the classiest move.

What did you think of “Dead to Me”? Do you think Wilden is the Beach Hottie? Do you think Ali is still alive or was at the time of the removal of the body?

Pretty Little Liars airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC Family.

I don’t understand why spencer cries when she unlocks the door. What does that empty room mean?!

    • Anonymous

He didn’t leave a clue or an explanation. It was just an empty room that means their relationship was a lie

I just wanted to point out that ABC family ruined that part with the twitter handle #poorspencer. I already what would happen before she opened the door! Really annoying.

OKay, this Spencer storyline is officially the best thing to ever happen to this show! Troian Bellisario is just knocking it out of the park is riveting to watch Spencer unraveling. After almost three full seasons, we finally get to see what should have happened way earlier: one of the Liars losing it because of A, not just being a bit jumpy.

how did spencer come to the conclusion that it was wilden who impregnated alison? and why were the other so mad that she “took it out on them”?!

    • Megan

I think we all came to that conclusion. He was at Cape May and he revealed a lot to Emily’s mom about ‘a dead body’. He probably was the beach hottie from what they revealed. I don’t really get why the others were so mad though. I would be beyond angry about the whole situation.

Does anyone else think that Jamie is Caleb’s father? With daddy issues of her own, I find it kind of odd that Hannah pushes Caleb so hard to connect with family.

Does anyone else think that the girl in the red coat could be Cece Drake? It obviously isn’t Alli, since there was an autopsy done on her before the grave was dug up.

I still think Toby is on the girls side. But, Spencer needs to let go so that neither one of them is hurt for betraying either side.

Does anyone else really not want Aria and Wesley to get together? I feel like it might be going that way and I love Ezra and Aria and want them to stay together.

Season 3 is showing the best acting we have seen so far on the show. Spencer is killing it with her unraveling, Emily is rocking the angry/confused bit and Mona is just spectacularly creepy!

I think that Jamie could definitely be Caleb’s dad. I read the books so I have a feeling I know who the person under the red coat is but I’ll keep that out. I don’t know what to think about Toby: I want him to be good, but part of me doesn’t think he is.

I think that Cece Drake might be the girl in the red coat as well. She’s certainly suspicious. Who else on the show is blonde?

  • Jill

I think Toby does love Spencer, he had to take everything from the room because it’s Spencer and he knew she would find it. He probably did not want her to see everything that was there because she would be in more pain than she is. I, like many others, have believed for the long time that the person in red was CECE, if not CECE, than maybe they will do the twin thing but I really hope they don’t. If it is someone we don’t already know, I will be so disappointed. I’m tired of all the new people they throw at us. I like CECE and I still want to know who Jenna was protecting, remember from the episode called The Khan Game? She glances at CECE and says “I was protecting someone” Toby? CECE? Ali? Wilden? Paige? Emily? Hard to tell.

I really like Spencer now. Well, she’s my favorite liar but I mean I like her even more now. No more bullshit crying for Ali who really wasn’t that much of a friend to them at all. Four for you, Troain. Four for you!

  • Kari

The girl in the red coat has to be Ali’s twin sister.
