Last night’s episode of How I Met Your Mother saw the return of Robin Scherbatsky’s alter-ego Robin Sparkles, gave us a life lesson in obsession, and once again proved just how much Ted Moseby is willing to let slide in the search for “The One.”
Obsession was the common theme in last night’s episode of How I Met Your Mother, and it seems everyone has felt it once or twice before.
Newly engaged Barney gets a taste of it as he seeks out all of Robin’s exes. In a bid to find out whom Robin’s teenage journals are littered with hapless love letters to, he stumbles upon Robin’s darkest secret yet…Robin Daggers.
Whilst Robin Sparkles usually gives How I Met Your Mother a taste of cheesy ’80s pop mixed in with some outrageous Canadian stereotyping, Robin Daggers appeared at the “beginning of grunge in 1996,” according to “Underneath the Tunes,” How I Met Your Mother‘s mock Canadian adaptation of MTV’s “Behind The Music.” In the mockumentary, Sparkles is revealed to have become obsessed with an unknown celebrity, which sends her into a tumbling spiral of hopelessness and helplessness.
In her obsessed, loved up and frankly stalker-ish state, the newly renamed Daggers writes, “P.S. I Love You,” a song about feeling desperately in love with someone you’re completely invisible to. Later we find out Sparkles/Daggers’ muse for the depressing ditty is Paul Shaffer, even though Barney is led to believe it to be Alan Thicke from whom he gets a black eye from upon confronting him.
Another tale of obsession in last night’s How I Met Your Mother was that of Ted’s new girlfriend — Janette. Lily and Marshall suspected her to be a stalker from the off, and they were right!
We met Ted’s new squeeze on the subway when he notices her reading the same book as him. Ted then did the full ‘Ted Moseby’ and broke out the yellow legal pads in an attempt to recall everything he could remember about her, to which he is told by Marshall and Lily to forget it, as its kind of creepy. However, by some strange happenstance, she stumbles across him whilst he’s at college lecturing.
Seemingly innocent at first, Marshall and Lily smell a rat. Things then go from bad to worse when Janette is repeatedly caught lying to Ted about the circumstances around their fluke “meet cute,” ranging from the fire alarm randomly going off, to her setting a bin on fire to make the smoke detectors alarm…and it doesn’t end there!
Ted then finds the receipt for the book they were coincidentally both reading on the subway at the same time, realising that Janette’s copy was purchased within 10 minutes of when he bought his. Oh, and that she’d been following him for around a year…
But it doesn’t look like Ted’s going to give up and move on from the episode’s ending. Why, Ted? Why?
How I Met Your Mother airs on CBS on Mondays, 8/7c.
