Following the announcement of the ninth and final season of How I Met Your Mother, we’ve had some mixed feelings.

In some ways it’s the end of an era. How I Met Your Mother has been warming our hearts since the first season premiered on Sep 19, 2005. Since then it has become one of television’s staples in our diet of entertainment, and a sitcom love affair we as the viewers have thrived on.

But given CBS have confirmed that How I met Your Mother will finally be coming to an end at the end of season 9, what will it mean for the likes of Robin Scherbatsky, Barney Stinson, Marshall Eriksen, Lily Aldrin and of course, the affable Ted Mosby? These guys are like family to us now. What are we going to do when they up and leave our screens for good?

According to E!News, Cobie Smulders (Robin) said of the decision:

It’s a tricky thing. There’s a lot of people involved in a decision like that. But luckily everybody made the same one and came on board.

Perhaps this is down to the apparent apprehensiveness of Jason Segal’s (Marshall) return to the show following the eighth series. However, it seems he came to his senses and realised it was only right to give How I met Your Mother a proper send off into re-run heaven.

Smulders carried on saying:

I sort of thought it was going to happen and then around the holidays when it started feeling like, ‘Oh, it might not [happen],’ it made me really sad. Because it’s the end of an era and How I Met Your Mother has become like a second home to me. So it’ll be nice starting season nine knowing this is it. Soak it in. Really be grateful and enjoy this last year.

She’s not letting much on though, claiming to be none the wiser about what we can expect from the final season.

All we know is whatever happens in season 9, we’re definitely looking forward to How I Met Your Mother being given a great last hurrah! Yet, whilst we can’t be sure of what’s in store, we’re itching to finally meet the mother!

How I Met Your Mother airs on CBS on Monday at 8 p.m. EST.
