In a great in-depth interview about her writing career, acting showrunner of The Vampire Diaries Julie Plec discusses the eventual end of the series.

EW has spoken to Plec as part of its “The Women Who Run TV” feature series, and the executive producer has some great insight into starting up in the television industry and talks about how she started working with The Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson.

The interview also touches on her and Williamson’s overall plan for The Vampire Diaries, which Plec reveals has been laid out for a while. “Early in season 2 [Kevin and I] came up with the way we see the series ending,” she says.

Plec also muses that the big question the show needs to answer before the end is how the main trio’s stories will conclude. And this has already been decided. “We know how we want Elena’s journey to end as it relates to both her character and her relationship with the two brothers, and how we want the brothers’ relationship with each other to end,” Plec reveals.

But even though they know how the characters will end up, that doesn’t necessarily mean their journey to get there is set in stone. Plec muses that the end of the series, “could come in year 6, if [the actors] decided they were ready to move on, or it could come in year 10, you never know.”

And don’t forget to tune in to The Vampire Diaries tonight, which returns with 2×12 “A View to Kill.”

I don’t think it will last ten years. Not after everyone going to college and starting life. it’d be too much and they’d have to kill off a lot of characters every few seasons and bring new ones on.

I can definitely seeing it last at least 10 years and would love it if it did! They can always find new and exciting storylines. I am very interested in finding out what those plans for how Elena and the brothers Salvatore’s storylines will conclude, I’m sure the end will be fitting and quite possibly heartwarming.

i’ve seen Vampire Diaries on and off and resented it but seeing ep 10 of this season, I quite enjoyed it. It’s a smart, fun show, but I don’t think it will or should last for 10 years total.

It should be 6 seasons. Elena had three seasons as a human, started with Stefan and then became a vampire and will eventually end with Damon. To me the ark has already been created.

if elena chooses a brother i hope they other brother finds true love in someone else.i dont want to see them alone.if Elena chooses Damon id want Stefan to be with someone like caroline and if its the other way around i want someone to challene damon like bonnie if they dont resurrecting kol #Kennetintheafterlife

I am absolutely convinced that Stefan and Elena will end up together. I love Damon and Elena together, but in terms of the writing, it feels like he’s a distraction to her, and all the signs (in my opinion) point to Elena getting back together with Stefan eventually.

Also, other people have pointed out that the one who doesn’t get Elena will need to find someone else to love, but I don’t see either brother actually being able to love someone else. So I think whichever brother doesn’t get Elena will end up sacrificing himself – and I think it’s more likely that it’ll be Damon, bringing his story full circle and allowing him some kind of redemption for all the horrible things he’s done.

That’s what I THINK will happen. Doesn’t mean I’m not hoping that Damon and Elena will ride off into the sunset together. ;)

When I started watching Buffy I was so sure that she and Angel would be endgame but that didnt really end up happening on the tv show so whats to stop the TVD producers from changing things up. oh and yes Stefan totally = Angel so clearly Stefan needs to find his own Cordy character lol!

I agree, Selena. Damon has always been the one ready to embrace death, anyway, and the one stubborn enough to go against what everyone else thinks he should act like or do. I would love a Delena ending, but if the Stefan gets the girl, then let Damon have a heroic death and be the reason why they CAN be together.
