JC Chasez, of ‘N Sync fame, surprised a room full of sorority girls with an a capella performance of a hit Lumineers song at the University of Southern California Monday.

Keeping with the surprising nature of his appearance, Chasez didn’t perform one of ‘N Sync’s megahits, but Rolling Stone’s 26th best song of 2012 – “Ho Hey” – backed by acoustic vocals from members of USC Delta Tau Delta.

Andi Inadomi, a member of USC Delta Tau Delta, recruited the former ‘N Sync vocalist to help his fraternity invite the ladies of USC Tri Delta (Delta Delta Delta) to an exchange, or party between the two Greek houses. Inadomi met Chasez through an internship with songwriter/producer Jimmy Harry, who is working on upcoming all-girl group Girl Radical with Chasez.

Among those in attendance at the Monday Night Dinner, where Chasez made his appearance, was USC Broadcast Journalism major Elisabeth Roberts, who recorded the video that has since reached more than 50,000 views on Youtube.

“We had heard rumors that he might be coming, but we all thought it was too good to be true,” Roberts told Hypable in an email. “Not in a million years did I think we would all be having our childhood dream come true. ‘N Sync was a huge part of the pop culture scene when we were growing up and getting to see a member from the band was a truly memorable experience.”

While he didn’t sing the heart-melting ‘N Sync ballad “This I Promise You,” Chasez still made quite the impact with “Ho Hey.”

“I was laughing because I couldn’t believe it was actually happening,” Roberts said. “Many girls turned bright red and were simply overwhelmed. I wish he had sung a classic ‘N Sync song, but his cover was truly amazing. He has a spectacular voice!”

Since posting it on Youtube on Monday, Roberts’ video has made its rounds across social media and entertainment sites – something she never expected.

“I never thought in a million years a shaky video I uploaded would go viral and attract so much attention, especially since ‘N Sync isn’t even together anymore (unfortunately),” she said. “But it has certainly been a learning experience. I’m a broadcast journalism major and cinema minor so I have obviously studied a lot of unexpected viral movie sensations, but I don’t think I ever expected our house to be a part of one!”

Although Chasez has stayed away from music since his 2004 solo album Schizophrenia, his popularity among 20-somethings hasn’t seemed to wane. In fact, 2013 is turning out to be a big year for ’90s hitmakers as The Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child, New Kids On The Block, 98 Degrees and Aaron Carter have all been making headlines.

As has become tradition when posting ‘N Sync news lately, we pray to Justin Timberlake’s former golden curls that JT, JC, Chris, Lance and Joey will soon reunite to give us a reason to bring back the “Bye Bye Bye” dance.
