Glee has released a video of an unusual performance number from next week’s episode, “Naked.”
The song, “This Is The New Year,” is pretty obviously set up as a big traditional New Directions end-of-episode closer, with one exception – the first sixty seconds of the performance are shot on a white studio screen, almost like a music video, breaking the fourth wall and acknowledging the camera, before changing to the group on stage in the auditorium. You can watch the video below:
“This Is The New Year” is a song originally by singer-songwriter Ian Axel, as part of his new project A Great Big World. Another Ian Axel song, “Girl, I Got A Thing” was featured in this week’s “Sadie Hawkins” episode – not covered as a live performance by the cast of the show, but his own original version was as a track played by the DJ at the Sadie Hawkins dance. The singer has also toured as a support act on Matthew Morrison’s concert tour.
Next week’s episode “Naked” features a photo shoot, and the style of that studio backdrop in the first sixty seconds does remind us of a set-up for a professional shoot, so Glee could be sticking to that theme. What do you think of Glee‘s version of the song, both musically and cinematographically? Do you like it when Glee does ‘music video’ style performances like this, “Scream,” or “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” or do you prefer the Glee performances to be as realistic as possible?
“Naked” will air on January 31.
