Briefly: The Academy Awards announced this morning that they will host a movie musical tribute honoring the best films of the past decade.

“The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “We are excited to showcase three musical films—‘Chicago,’ ‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘Les Misérables’— on our Oscar show.”

There were no other details shared, so we’ll have to wait to see just what kind of tribute is in the works. Presumably performers from each of the films will be there and singing live on stage.

If Beyonce appears is a part of the Dreamgirls segment, she’ll have had quite the line up of major television events in 2013: The Presidential Inauguration, the Super Bowl, and this.

Last week rumors surfaced that suggested the Les Miserables‘ cast would be uniting to perform a medley.

The 2013 Academy Awards will take place Sunday, February 24 and air live on ABC.

Although I acknowledge that the Phantom of the Opera film wasn’t the best done, it should still be showcased as one of the musical film in the past decade at the Oscars.

Mamma Mia? You know – the most successful musical film of the decade? I know the Academy hates box office success, but really.

Also, Hairspray? Rent? Honestly, if we’re talking musicals, Chicago and Dreamgirls are not the ones I want to see in a tribute.

Mamma Mia, wasn’t that big and neither was Hairspray or Rent. They may have made money but when you think of great movie musicals, recently, I would agree with Dreamgirls and Chicago

They just did this a few years ago when Hugh hosted. Their big opening number was Hugh singing ‘The Musical Is Back’, and Beyonce came out and sang some, too.

calm down everybody, they are only celebrating those movies cuz those are the only ones that have been nominated or won Golden Globes and Oscars.

Um, so have Moulin Rouge, Once, Sweeney Todd, and La Vie en Rose.

I’m not sure Sweeney Todd was nominated for best picture at the Oscars…

I would love Dreamgirls to be showcased. The only musical that predominately features people of color, so I’m down for that. Love JHud
