As the wheels begin to turn on Downton Abbey‘s fourth series, a new love interest will reportedly hop on for the romantic Edwardian ride. Major spoilers for series 3 ahead.

Have your tears dried over the loss of Matthew Crawley, Downton Abbey fans? Because it seems that Lady Mary’s have, or will soon. According to TVLine, Downton Abbey is looking to fill the newly-vacated romantic niche in Mary’s life – and it won’t be with a cowboy.

Apparently, Mary’s series 4 suitor will be one “Lord Anthony Gillingham,” not to be confused with Edith’s ill-fated fiance Sir Anthony Strallan. Gillingham is described as a dashing, handsome gentleman in his mid-thirties, and is apparently meant to become a familiar face on Downton Abbey. What remains to be seen, however, is how Gillingham will compete with the memory of the recently-departed Matthew – you know, the other dashing, handsome thirty-something in Mary’s life. Dan Stevens’ departure from the show has left many fans nursing wounded feelings, and Downton‘s creator Julian Fellowes will need to be deft in his introduction of any character who intends to take Matthew’s place at Mary’s side.

Fans of the other widowed member of the Crawley clan – Sybil’s husband Tom Branson – may also be need to keep their eyes peeled for a new love on the horizon, as per subtle intimations from the Downton Abbey Christmas special. The show is allegedly casting a nanny (possibly for Tom’s daughter Sybil, or Mary’s newborn son) though there is currently no specific indication that the character will serve as anything more. This being Downton Abbey, however, it might be best to anticipate any eventuality.

Series 4 of Downton Abbey‘s is scheduled to begin filming in February and will air on ITV in fall of 2013.

How do you feel about Mary moving on?

  • Casey

I’m still having trouble processing fan speculation of a Mary/Tom or Tom/Rose romance. Maybe it would be better just to bring in new characters with clean slates, as long as they don’t make it too easy or too immediate for their (our) wounded hearts.

    • BlueNargles

I completely agree, it would just be too easy if their next soulmates happened to be already-established characters.

    • Jason Fraser

A Tom-Rose romance isn’t beyond the realm of believability, but the haughty Mary would never lower herself to become involved with a former chauffeur. That annoying accent of Tom’s, his constant talk of Ireland and lack of manners annoy me and I’m an American. Just think of how those things would annoy a well-born, grander-than-thou “Lady” like Mary.

Even though it’s totally wrong I would be okay with Mary/Tom…but anything else it’s way too soon.

I think it’s too soon. But knowing Downton Abbey, several months could have passed since the series finale. And it’s not as if it’s gonna be love at first sight, or at least i hope not. Given time, anything can happen. And things will be interesting for sure.

In a show where a season can take place over several years, too soon is really a hard concept to judge.

    Too soon!

  • Shirley

She should move on eventually, but I was shocked at Matthews demise

I hope this man has sarcastic streak. It would make his interactions with Mary more interesting.. I also hope Mary to become ice-cold like she used to be. She’s more complex and awesome that way.

Mr. Fellowes, whatever you’re planning to do in season 4, please please please give Lady Edith some happiness!!

    • Janeway4350

I totally great, give Lady Edith some happiness.

  • Jason Fraser

Instead of killing off Matthew, the writers could have had him disappear, adding an air of mystery to the show. Dan Stevens and his weak chin won’t make it in America, so within a year, he will be looking for work in Britain and if he hadn’t been killed off, what an interesting story it would have made for Matthew to return just as Mary develops another love interest.

    • Casey

^This is awesome in many ways

    • StefRo

I read an article that intimated that Dan Stevens is hoping to parlay his downton abbey fame into the American market….but how will he do that when he has alienated said market?

  • http://twitter.com/Snapescape Laura Cain

    *shakes fist* Fellowes!!

  • Ryan

I feel like Edith will end up being married with lots of kids and she will actually get her “just desserts,” with Fellowes trying to show that good things come to those who wait.

  • Janette McDonald

I was shocked with Matthew’s death it was too soon – son just born and all that. I agree Mr Fellowes is going to have to come up with something good now because everybody loved the Matthew / Mary relationship.

  • TomBransonsgirl

Don’t care much about Mary, so I’m neutral in this case. But for Tom Branson I wish he finds new happiness. She has to be awesome though. I think Rose/Tom could be possible, but we don’t know enough about her so far. So maybe an Irish nanny? I would love that!

I don’t think it’s too soon for Tom, since by the time S4 starts he will have been widowed almost two years. But for Mary? Yes.

BTW I love his Irish accent. It’s adorable.

I don’t see Tom/Rose as impossible. But either way I’d like him to fall in love again.

  • Winkyxx

I’ll be ecstatic if Bradley James joins Downton Abbey.

  • julia

Hmm….perhaps the name should be “Dowton Tragedies” – Ah yes, I remember now tis the weather to blame. No?

  • curtis

matthew shouldnt have died but maybe have gotten hurt. there was no need for him to die. he was my fave character!!!!!! it was sooooooo sad to see matthew lying under his car dead i thought i was gonna have a breakdown

  • Silvie

I’d like to see Mary mourn Matthew for a while. That will allow us viewers to do the same. A new love later on, fine. But let us see her sad for a while.

  • David

By far, the best continuing story line concerns Thomas Barrow who, admittedly, starts out in Season 1 as a bit of a sleazeball. Over time, however, we see that the life of a closeted and passionate gay man in pre-1970s Britain was close to hell on earth, especially for one who deeply wants love, not just a quick shag behind the shrubbery. In Season 3 Thomas’ budding love for the new footman, Jimmy, opens up his character and reveals a capacity for love tempered by prudence and patience. And in the final episode, he fights bravely for his love. Thomas emerges as the person whose character is tested the most, and he emerges as an heroic figure. The final scene with Jimmy moves this love story forward, leaving us in suspense for the next season, but with the air charged with promise and the hope that Thomas will see his love returned.

  • Jim

Matthew leaving was tragic indeed, but you can’t control what an actor will do. I’m sure others are lining up to take his place. I want more than 8 episodes per year!! Who wants to wait a whole year for 8-10 hours of broadcasting??? Most network shows are 22-26 episodes. Maybe not that many, but how about 12-14? Certainly the show is interesting enough to write that much content….. How about it Julian Fellowes, Carnival, and Masterpiece?!?! :)

  • AVWoman

I think it was a very bad choice to kill off Matthew at tis point. The fans need time to enjoy the happy family for gosh sakes. We just lost Sybil in childbirth and now Mary births a child and her husband in all his joy has this horrific accident. Just not a wise idea. Bring him back. I mean we didn’t know for sure if he was dead altho it did not look good.Anything however is possible in T.V. right so, bring him back. My daughter is calling out here here in the back ground.

  • Ghboston

I want to see a Mary/Branson romance.. Please????

  • Lily

This is very out of character. Tom waited freaking 6 years for sybil!!! doesn’t that indicate that she was the only woman for him? well, maybe this is just another edna-plot. anyhow I am done with this show. this was the last drop.

  • NancyLee

I would love to see Sir Anthony Strallan retun and fight for edith.
