The first clip for the Stephenie Meyer-produced Sundance film Austenland, written and directed by Jerusha Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and starring Keri Russell and Bret McKenzie, has been released.

The film, which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival earlier today, is based off the 2007 novel by Shannon Hale and tells the story of a woman traveling to a Jane Austen theme park in search for her perfect gentleman after becoming obsessed with the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice.

Take a look at the clip below, via MTV:

Premiering earlier today at Sundance, some critics and festival attendees took to Twitter to offer their reaction on the film:

Meyer produced the film with Gina Mingacci, while Robert Fernandez and Dan Levinson are executive producers.

meyer is not allowed to do anything remotely related to Jane Austen…worst author ever cannot be within 10 feet of anything related to one of the best authors ever.

Don’t worry, I have no idea what role Stephenie Meyer played as producer of this movie, but Austenland is based on the novel by Shannon Hale. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and am definitely looking forward to the movie!

Hater. Worst author ? You need to read more ! She is far from the worse author sure Twilight has some problems but she’s growing and the Host is beautiful.

I think it looks sort of quaint and cutesy.
is the blonde woman who tries to be a show off the one in “pursue of her perfect gentleman”?

and what do they mean “pick up” what they need to win something at sundance in order for the general public to get to see the movie?

    • Alcyone

This movie was made by a small independent film company. They’re showing it at Sundance in hopes that a larger studio will “pick it up” so that it can reach a larger nationwide audience.

I don’t know about “pursue of her perfect gentleman” but she was in one of the episodes of Merlin (The Changeling).

  • Alcyone

It isn’t mentioned above in the article, but Austenland based on the novel by Shannon Hale. (also the author of Goose Girl, Princess Academy, etc.) Not exactly deep literature, but a thoroughly fun and sweet book. I’m really looking forward to this movie. If you haven’t read the book, make sure you check it out before the movie is released!

    • Alcyone

Ha. Just kidding… Shannon Hale IS mentioned above. I guess I was just super annoyed that all they mention in the headline is Stephenie Meyer as producer… Maybe they’re trying to attract the twilight audience, but I know her name will be a turn-off for many people!

Don’t you Twilight haters have anything better to do ? Guess not.

I saw this film at Sundance and I was pleasantly surprised. I’s fairly predictable but quite charming and funny and Keri Russell is of course a doll. Best part was the Q&A where someone asked about Stephenie Meyer’s input and Jerusha Hess replied something vague along the lines of, “she gave some input…” implying she didn’t have much to do with it at all other than have her name attached. Thought it was funny.
