The 70th annual Golden Globe awards were held tonight, with Argo and Les Miserables picking up top honors in film, while Homeland and Girls were awarded for best series on the television side of things.
Argo picked up the Best Motion Picture – Drama award, as Ben Affleck was also rewarded Best Director for his terrific job on Argo after he was snubbed by the Academy Awards. Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his fantastic portrayal in Lincoln, while Jessica Chastain picked up Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama honors for her stunning performance in Zero Dark Thirty.
Les Miserables was crowned winner of Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, with Hugh Jackman winning Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his terrific turn in Les Miserables. After a lengthy improv session between Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig, Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy for Silver Linings Playbook, accepting her award with: “I beat Meryl!” Lena Dunham, meanwhile, was awarded the distinction of Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy in Girls, which also earned Best TV Series – Comedy.
Homeland won big for drama television series, picking up Best Television Series – Drama, as well as an honor for Damian Lewis as Best Actor in a Drama. It seems Homeland is still the television darling, although don’t be surprised to see Breaking Bad (and Bryan Cranston) back on top after its final season next year. To continue the Homeland dominance, Claire Danes picked up Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, with only Mandy Patinkin losing out for Best Supporting Actor to Ed Harris in Game Change.
Christoph Waltz was a bit of a surprise picking up the Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture award for Django Unchained. The odds-on favorite had to have been Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln, as it was likely to see DiCaprio and Waltz split the vote on Django Unchained. It will be interesting moving forward to see whether Waltz can grab any traction in the Oscar race. Anne Hathaway predictably picked up the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award for her stunning, heartbreaking performance as Fantine in Les Miserables.
Quentin Tarantino surprised with an award for Best Screenplay for his terrific work on Django Unchained, as the Golden Globes combine Original and Adapted into a single category. Amour beat out stiff competition to win Best Foreign Language Film, while Brave proved the power of Pixar once again by taking home the Best Animated Feature award.
