The two-hour season 2 premiere of Smash may be more than three weeks away, but NBC is releasing the first hour on Jan. 14.
That’s right, Smash fans! After an eight-month hiatus, NBC’s musical drama will return in just days. The first half of the season premiere episode will be available Monday on NBC.com, Hulu.com, iTunes, Amazon, XBox and any NBC affiliate stations that choose to air it. American Airlines passengers flying domestic between Jan. 15 and Jan. 31 will also get the opportunity to see the advanced screening.
Episode synopsis:
Back from a successful run in Boston, Eileen (Anjelica Huston), Julia (Debra Messing) and Tom (Christian Borle) are blindsided by both personal and professional obstacles as they seek to take “Bombshell” to Broadway. Karen (Katharine McPhee) consults her new mentor, Broadway star Veronica “Ronnie” Moore (guest star Jennifer Hudson), as she finds herself on the brink of fame, but her success may come at cost to Ivy (Megan Hilty). A new talent (Jeremy Jordan) is discovered in an unexpected place. Jack Davenport, Leslie Odom, Jr., Andy Mientus and Krysta Rodriguez also star. Jennifer Hudson, Thorsten Kaye, and Brian d’Arcy James guest star.
Interestingly, Brian d’Arcy James, who played Julia’s husband Frank in season 1, is listed as a guest star for the season premiere episode. It was revealed last summer that his role would be diminished, so the premiere may tie some loose ends right off the bat.
Season 2 will see several guest stars including Jennifer Hudson, Sean Hayes, Nikki Blonsky, Jesse L. Martin and more. Check out a sneak peek of Jennifer Hudson singing “Can’t Let Go” from episode 4.
The two-hour Smash season premiere airs Feb. 5 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC. Catch up on season 1 by entering to win a free copy of the Smash season 1 DVD!
