Fans are always passionate about book to film adaptations being as loyal as possible, and the filmmakers behind The Hunger Games franchise understand their concern.

They’re adjusting your expectations nice and early in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, who yesterday released the first six photos from the film.

Director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobsen revealed that characters Bonnie, Twill, and Darius have been cut from the Catching Fire movie. So how did they make adjustments to key plot points? Lawrence said it “was fun figuring out new ways around things and new ways of doing things.” He’s of course referencing the change in how Katniss will learn of District 13, which was introduced to Katniss by Bonnie and Twill in Suzanne Collins’ book.

As for Darius, his removal means we won’t be introduced to District 12′s young peacekeeper. If you recall, he intervenes during Gale’s whipping by Romulus. Darius is then sentenced to life as an Avox. Despite Darius’ cut, we know that the punishment scene with Gale is indeed included in the film – we saw a photo of it yesterday. It’s uncertain at this time whether Darius will appear in Mockingjay when he is tortured for information. Given the Mockingjay book will be split into two films, one could assume they’ll use the additional screen time afforded to introduce him.

Jacobsen defended the cuts to EW and offered a silver lining: “It’s as agonizing for us to lose things from the book as it is for a fan,” she said. “I want every single thing in there. But you know what? If you have to give up something in order to give more time to Katniss and Gale or to Effie as she starts to feel a conscience, you make the sacrifices in order to serve the characters and themes that are more essential.”

Do you think these are fair Catching Fire changes?

Catching Fire opens in theaters November 22.

You know, I think that the changes they made in THG were just fine. I for one didn’t miss Madge or the Avox. It did change the story a little, but I think that scrapping them for giving us a better feel of the world of Panem and for explaining what Tracker Jackers are to viewers who didn’t read the books was worth it. The books were all from Katniss’ point of view, and the film let us see things through others eyes. I pretty sure that if it’s executed well, those cuts won’t be missed either.

Totally agree. This doesn’t sound like much of a change to be honest and we knew cuts would be necessary. I’m pretty happy with this as it is. We will, of course, have to wait for the movie to make a proper deduction, but for now I’m still as excited as ever.

  • Jess

I am kinda disappointed in the loss of Bonnie and Twill. But I’m more curious as to how they will bring up District 13 in the film,

    • Matt

Probably just get told by someone in the arena..

  • http://www.facebook.com/isak.kohaly Isak Kohaly

To be honest, I was totally expecting this.

  • Emilia

I have a ton of faith in Francis Lawrence so I’m not worried about any cuts, I’m more excited to see how certain plot points are introduced without it because I think they did that flawlessly with the stuff hey cut from the hunger games

  • Trufflehunter

they never introduced the avid girl in the first movie so it makes sense that they wouldn’t introduce Darius. To be honest, Bonnie and Twill always sorta seemed inessential other than their introducing of District 13. Especially considering that they get killed without even making it to District 13!! But I think they’ll just make Katniss smart enough to see that the same shot of the wreckage is shown every time in the footage, that way shell be curious as to what really is out there. That would quickly solve that problem!

  • whatanerdgirlsays

Considering that they could’ve dropped bigger characters from the movie…these ones don’t disappoint me at all.

  • Jill

I’m okay with these cuts because it actually took me a minute to realize who they were talking about. It’s been so long since I’ve read Catching Fire. I was going to reread but maybe I wont because I don’t want to be too disappointed by any other cuts.

In the first movie, I was actually really disappointed and upset by the fact that Madge was not there to give Katniss the Mockingjay pin. It turned out just fine but I would have loved to see Madge.

  • Lorena

Hmmm, I always thought of Darious as kind of a nice buffer. Well, as long as they don’t cut out any main characters.

  • WeasleyWrock

I’m definitely going to miss all of them.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Liliana.Sa Liliana Sa

i really wanted to see Darius…i grew attached to the guy!+ i wanted to see how good looking he seemed (being youngest Peacekeeper and all!!)LOL

    • AmyW115

      He’s not that important.

      • Laurathemockingjay

        He actually is.

        • AmyW115

Not really. I mean, yes he steps on for Gale when he’s whipped and I think Peeta mentions he was tortured at the Capitol, but it’s nothing serious that could completely alter the entire story…that would be Katniss’s job.

    • http://www.facebook.com/elysia.jones.75 Elysia Jones

      same LOL

  • http://www.facebook.com/katharine.smith.73 Katharine Smith

Even though I loved the Bonnie and Twill story line, I can imagine how much of the movie it would take up, its a pretty long(ish) scene in the book. I am very interested to see how she discovers district 13 now…. I am totally ok with these cuts! very fair

  • Me

The only disappointment I’m feeling is the fact that one of my favorite moments was cut. Which is when she goes back home and then hears that the fence is on. But, that isn’t a big deal.

If they introduce the idea in a way that doesn’t make me want to yell, then I fully support it. Bonnie and Twill are not important; they’re merely mentioned once in Mockingjay.

    I’m cool with it.

  • Elphaba Thropp

From the defensive comments of the filmmakers, it seems like they were expecting a lot of hate from these cuts, like in Harry Potter! I hope they’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that we trust them.

  • Crazy-Eight23

I think that for the introduction of District 13 they could have Plutarch do it. when he shows Katniss his watch, it could have 13 hours instead of 12. Then he can make some comment that Katniss doesn’t get then but does later. I’d be satisfied with that…

    • Hermione Everdeen

That’s a really good idea!! I don’t think they’d do that though, because some fans could get mad.

      • The-Hob7

I don’t understand why fans would get mad. Using the watch kills two “mocking jays” with one stone. It covers the clock system the Games follows and then District 13.

  • Teranel

I was really concerned when I started to read this article, but I feel that these are fair cuts. I know they can’t put everything in, and there are parts of Catching Fire that I want to see a lot more, so I feel they’re going about this in the best way possible.

  • http://twitter.com/SavannahhLynn14 Ess.Ell.Ell(:

How will Katniss find out about the rebellions?! First, they take out Madge, who gave Katniss the Mockingjay pin, then they take out Bonnie and Twill who show Katniss that the mockingjay is the sign of the rebellion. Darius isn’t thaaaat important though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/elysia.jones.75 Elysia Jones

but darius is an avox server in the capitol

    • JuliaaChristine

and even though he is a small part of the books he’s a big part of how katniss reacts before the quarter quell in the capitol. And in Mockingjay when Gale and her finally find out the name of the Avox they saw in the woods.

  • Laurathemockingjay

I do not think that they should of taken Madge out of the movies. She made the mockingjay. And what about Katniss discovering District eight had a uprising? Huh?

  • i_am_awesome

i don’t think it’s THAT big a deal…but the things which they cut – as miniscule the significance of them may be…DID hold a tight place in the story line…perhaps it does not SEEM like it…but i could name several scenarios in which CF’s people could have great difficulty in finding an alternative plot or “scene.”

  • 08jackt

I think I might actually like the movie better then the 2nd book, weirdly enough. I felt it had like 50 pages of crap that REALLY didn’t need to be in there.

  • Raye

    Power Rangers!

  • http://twitter.com/Dillon_Mays Dillon Mays

Hmm. I wonder who will explain District 13 then.

  • http://www.facebook.com/roxy.bergsma Roxy Bergsma

Though I’m sure it’ll turn out fine with the cuts, I’m disappointed Darius won’t be in Catching Fire. This: “It’s uncertain at this time whether Darius will appear in Mockingjay when he is tortured for information. Given the Mockingjay book will be split into two films, one could assume they’ll use the additional screen time afforded to introduce him.” I hope that’ll happen. I was suprised when I talked to my friend who had suggested the books to me and she couldn’t remember who Darius was, while what happened to him had left quite an impact on me.

Well, I’m very much looking forward to this November anyway, with or without the cuts.

  • Name

A little disappointed…what next? They’re are going to cut out Annie?

  • Name

I’m also upset how thy cut out Madge from the first book

  • Billy Bob Joe Joey YOUR MOMMMM

I don’t exactly mind this.. but I do think it would be good if they add Darius… I’m not sure why but I think I won’t miss Bonnie and Twill as much…

  • AshleyMagen

my question is with them having cut maDge out of the first movie if they don’t introduce her into the second Movie how is Katniss going to learn about the uprisings in district 8?

    • JuliaaChristine

thats true because she’s in Madges house looking for her to show her the dress for the final dinner of the victory tour when she sees the tv in mayor undersees office. I wonder how they will twist that into play. Or if they will cut it out completely….

  • JuliaaChristine

I understand you have to make cuts and Bonnie and Twill I get. okaay they will twist it some way or another to make her figure out about district 13. I just hope they don’t cut out big parts like they did in THG. It bothered e that Madge wasn’t in it because now they either loose a big part in catching fire or have to introduce her in a new way in it. She started the Mockingjay thing with katniss it was her pin. but whatever they do i just don’t want them to cut out good parts from the arena. Like the pearl or something. because in THG they cut out her not being able to look at Peeta naked and that kind of bothered me…. its a big reason why the victors act the way they do around her at the quarter quell entrances. but i guess ill have to wait until november 22nd to be able to judge.

  • ♔ Hakim Shujaee

I think it’s a shame Darius wont be in Catching Fire.

There was such a missed opportunity with the interaction between Katniss and Darius after she saw him for the first time after he becomes an avox. My memory is a little hazy but does she drop something or break her plate on purpose so she can get a closer look at him? That moment of silent apology between them would have been great to watch on-screen. I was also looking forward to Bonnie and Twill scene as well.

  • lol101

Daruis is important though, isn’t that why Gale fell in love with Katniss?

  • Me :)

It’s always a bummer when they have to cut characters that fans enjoy, but they do a good job of deciding what is really important and what’s not. As long as they keep the order of events, and don’t change any character’s personalities or anything too drastic, the small things mentioned in the article won’t bother me. All the new casting seems equally amazing as the original casting, and I think Catching Fire will be amazing. Also, I think Jacobson makes a valid point, because if they tried to fit everything into the movie, they couldn’t go into far enough depth into the important things.

  • Aram AlexMercer Muñoz

Why no one is talking about the fact that the Haymitch’s Games are also cut? I really wanted to see that :c
