As promised, today Entertainment Weekly offered a first look at The Hunger Games: Catching Fire!

UPDATE 4: See three of the below photos in super high-res!

UPDATE 3: One more photo, this time a behind-the-scenes look. Pictured are Liam Hemsworth (Gale), Francis Lawrence (director), and Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss):

UPDATE 2: Three MORE photos! This time we have first looks at Prim, Katniss’ mother, President Snow, Haymitch, and our very first look at Plutarch (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman):

UPDATE: Two more photos depicting Katniss, Peeta, and Gale have been released!

Gale in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

New quotes from director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobsen were also shared today:

”Jen and Liam have amazing chemistry,” says director Francis Lawrence of his young stars. ”They have a nice moment right before Katniss is reaped that is the very first thing we shot. And then when Gale has been brought in from the whipping, that’s another really nice moment they have alone.” ”This the book where you have to understand the pull Katniss feels to both Peeta and Gale,” say producer Nina Jacobson.

First we saw the magazine’s cover featuring Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Finnick (Sam Claflin).

Then there was this tantalizing photo of Finnick coming up behind Katniss presumably in the Remake Center during the sugar cube scene:

Sam Claflin and Jennifer Lawrence in Catching Fire

How do you think Finnick looks with his arena gear and standing by Katniss?

The first look cover story, to be seen in this Friday’s new issue of EW, includes insight into director Francis Lawrence and Suzanne Collins’ three-day script meeting, Woody Harrelson adjusting to a new director, and our first interview with Claflin on the Finnick role. He describes filming the sugar cube scene as the “scariest moment of my life. I’m on Twitter and so many people have been like ‘Don’t mess this up, or we will kill you.’”

The article is not yet online, but when it is we’ll share it with you.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opens November 22, 2013. This is our first look at characters in the highly anticipated sequel.

While this is our first official look, paparazzi photos taken in December depicted Finnick, Katniss, and Peeta in the same arena gear while shooting in Hawaii. See the impressively high-res Quarter Quell photos in our previous report.

  • http://twitter.com/Rantuch Nick Rantuccio

I think he looks great! I feel like he should be more tan, like the character. But I can definitely see Finnick in Claflin. And Jennifer Lawrence looks incredible as always. Very excited for next November!

  • natalia

He’s no Justin Hartley, that’s for sure. (I’m not bitter, I just think hartley would’ve been absolutely perfect for the part. At least he’s always Finnick in my head)

  • Matthew

Fans says to him “don’t mess this up or we will kill you” Wow..fans/fandoms are completely f’ed up nowadays aren’t they!

    • http://twitter.com/Rantuch Nick Rantuccio

I’m sure they were kidding. Or at the very least they just meant they’d give him hell for it.

      • Matthew

Kidding? I dont know about that, especially with this generation of people

    • Hellen

Bro, this means a lot to some people. And “kill you” just means “we’ll be upset, cause this is one of our favorite characters.” :)

  • http://twitter.com/potterfan92 Raina

I love him as Finnick I think he will do well in this role. He knows the pressure of being the character because of I quote I read on EW. Of course Jennifer is flawless.

  • http://www.facebook.com/isak.kohaly Isak Kohaly

Unfortunately, to me he is zero attractive. But hey, if he plays the part well I’m more than fine with it!

  • http://twitter.com/Merina2 Merina

Oh my gosh, he’s PERFECT…wow. Can’t wait to see this, now :)

  • http://twitter.com/LlamanatorM Klaine-shaped heart

I think Grant Gustin would be better as Finnick :x

  • Alex

Why is November so far away?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1683360003 Paige Barton

that’s not how i imagined him at all. but i’ll give him a chance…

  • hannah

I wasn’t sure about Sam when I first just saw the cover…then I saw the still, and omg. Perfection. So freaking excited and can’t wait for the rest of the spread!! :)

  • Crazy-Eight23

He looks great. Hot, actually…lol! I think he’ll be a good Finnick.

  • http://twitter.com/akacj7 Caroline J.

not a fan of the mag cover, but the official still is DEE-VINE!

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

Still don’t see him physically, but I do like that picture. Maybe the guy can act, I feel like I should have more faith in this casting!

  • Leigh

um it must be too long since I read catching fire because I cannot for the life of me remember what the “sugar cube scene” is…

    • http://twitter.com/Tygridia Tygridia

It’s when he hits on Katniss (when they met) and she thinks he’s a D

  • potterjay

Was it ever said that he had long hair in the books? For some reason I pictured Finnick as a sort of sea version of Hercules! Think Sam Claflin looks pretty fine though, and if he acts it well and IS the part, I don’t have an issue with him not looking exactly as I imagined, everyone imagines differently!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

“Sea version of Hercules” Haha I look that description.

  • http://twitter.com/HungerSlytherin HungerSlytherin

He looks great as Finnick. Why is November so far away??

  • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

So is it really not a spoiler that they’re going back to the arena? I remember being so shocked when I read that in the books. I didn’t know if Summit was going to try to protect that reveal within the official advertising. I like how the marketing of the first movie showed very limited material from the actual games. I was wondering if this time they would show more of the victory tour and growing tension in the districts without really admitting that Katniss goes back into the games. I’m kinda disappointed if that really is just getting spoiled everywhere. I know most of my friends who never read the books guessed that she would compete again already on their own.

    • Jason

      Lionsgate, not Summit.

      • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

Hahaha….whoops, that’s right. Lionsgate bought Summit, not the other way around. Sorry!

    • Lucia

If it really was a big spoiler they’d keep it hidden, but there’s no way they can keep something so integral to the whole plot a secret like that. Advertising possibilities would be severely limited and they can’t just repeat the advertising style from the first film or people won’t be interested – people won’t go and see a film like this built solely on tension and no action happening; this is the most exciting aspect of the film, so they’ll play it up to hype audiences

      • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

I knew it would be hard to pull off. I wondered more if they’d show the shooting and violence in District 11 during the Victory Tour. They could still suggest an action movie by only showing the growing revolution. But yeah, they couldn’t repeat the previous ad campaign. We’ll see what they end up focusing on.

    • Abby

To be fair, if people didn’t want to be spoiled they would probably avoid sites like this. In themselves, the photos don’t really make it obvious that she’s going back to the games. For sure people expect action so “Katniss and Finnick go to war” could mean anything, regardless of what they’re wearing. I think it’s fine.

Not to mention, I’m sure a lot of people who haven’t read the books have asked what the second movie is about. My bf asked right after watching the first movie, in which case I had to answer. It’s still huge finding out why they go back and what the Quarter Quell is like, which is more important than knowing they go back IMO!

      • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

Yeah, they’d avoid this website, but can they avoid newstands carrying EW? The text doesn’t spoil the new tournament, but their costumes definitely suggest she’s a tribute again. I think it can be interpreted that way. I know of several people who guessed instantly that they were returning to the Hunger Games. But I also know of some who have no clue. I’m just wondering how many spoil free movie-only fans will survive?

    • Xyruk

Honestly when I first read catching Fire it didn’t come as a shock at all that Katniss would end up going back to the Games again. What else would happen in the book? The book would’ve been terribly boring if we just saw through Katniss’ eyes as she watched the Hunger Games, even if Gale or Primm ended up going. Sure there’d be shock value in Primm getting picked again, but Just “watching” people in the games would’ve been bad. So Katniss going in my mind was a no brainer.

      • http://twitter.com/eiVega eiVega

I didn’t even think we’d experience another games. I thought the revolution was already going to start. They said things would be more dangerous outside the games now after what she did. I thought the story was going to go in a completely different direction. I basically thought Mockingjay was going to start already during Catching Fire but was surprised we had to wait through a whole other tournament before the real rebellion began.

  • McFU

It seems like he should be taller when compared to Katniss. I always imagined Finnick and Gale being very similar is size and stature.

  • http://twitter.com/Dillon_Mays Dillon Mays

    Ehh. Doesn’t look Finnicky enough.

  • d3erudite

    Ciaran Hines can suck it

  • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

Am I the only one here who thinks their costumes look incredibly low budget? Also I agree with the comments about keeping the fact they are going back into the arena a secret ALTHOUGH they really fumbled the whole “how the system works” explanation in the first one so I’m sure a lot of people are confused anyway.

    • Josh

Low budget? Lol. THG costumes looked low budget, these look great. They have a look of quality to them.

      • http://twitter.com/vonchambers Devon Chambers

I meant the arena costumes – they look incredibly cheap.

The other costumes look fine, no complaint there.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sarah.wollenparty Sarah Wollenparty

I CANNOT wait that long… BLUH.

  • morgen71

He’s much better in the photo in the training room than on the magazine cover, I think.

  • Enelya

Fnnick’s staff thing doesn’t look like a trident to me

  • RichieC

isn’t Finnick suppose to be buff, this guy is scrawny

  • Kavitha

It’s weird: He doesn’t look like Finnick to me when he’s himself or posing, but he looks perfect in action. Since the latter is the important part, I’m warming up to this casting now!

  • Alex

I have to admit, I’m warming up to Claflin as finnick more and more as more pictures come up.

that second picture just screams FINNICK to me. :D

  • http://twitter.com/LiamFloyd Liam Floyd

The outfits in the arena are ugly. I’m disappointed in Finnick. The official still gives me hope, though. Seriously though what are they wearing?

  • WhatTheGrace

Although he’s not entirely what i imagined, he’s definitely got that cheeky confident side to him right! I have more hope now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000508407296 Luke Payne

So happy that I’m a subscriber. (YES! :D)

  • Karina

Pretty sure Finnick isn’t white but then again neither is Katniss but Jennifer is so I shouldn’t have expected too much of the movie to do well on that front

    • Josh

      Finnick is tanned…

    • Shelby

“Tall, athletic, with golden skin and bronze-colored hair and those incredible *green* eyes.”

      -Catching Fire

Thats how the book describes Finnick, so I think white is definitely one of the options for his ethnicity.

    • Sheechiibii

Katniss is described as olive skinned, so her being white is pretty accurate, though she should probably have more of a tan. And Finnick is described as tanned, so white is also an option for him.

  • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

    I’m shrieking. Acceptable, right?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

Totally acceptable. As soon as I saw this pics my inner fan girl exploded too.

    • hpboy13

      Always :)

See you at the red carpet barricades?

      • http://twitter.com/NatashaPeartree Natasha Pereira

        haha ya know it!

  • Glaciusx

    Peeta looks guuuud.( ̄ー ̄)

  • Thang

Josh and Liam are looking good! It looks like Peeta’s hair is darker while Gale’s is lighter though.

  • Crazy-Eight23

Does Gale’s hair look lighter to anyone else..?

  • applepie

    FIRE IS CATCHING.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045615098 Riana-Tiana Menezes

Oh Gosh. That still of Finnick and Katniss is PERFECT! Jennifer has the perfect scared expression and Sam’s flirty smirk is simple brilliant!

  • http://twitter.com/BeccaPhoenix16 Liam I exist

    AFJWEOJFJKQOFNASLQWLR !

THAT IS HOW I’M FEELING RIGHT NOW! SO PUMPED!

  • Donna

I don’t think that’s the sugar cube scene in the photograph–I think it’s during training for the Quarter Quell when he comes up behind her and helps her with a knot she was struggling with. The sugar cube thing happens when they are dressed for the tribute parade.

    Gale is looking good.

  • Lia

I can’t believe HG chat is over, i so would have loved a discussion over these new awesome pictures ARGGGGG!!!

Sam Claflin is so in character – he’s looking good… so far and i’m pretty sure that’s Gale’s whipping scene.

  • Hal

Wow! Prim already looks like she’s 15.

  • Megan B

I like prims hair better in the 2 braids. And Finnick doesn’t look a lot like i imagined him to be, but neither did Haymitch.

  • WhatTheGrace

    Oh yeah… that’s not how i imagined Finnick’s trident.

  • erised31

The actress for Prim is the same as in the first one right?

    • Zack

      Yup :P

She’s growing up so fast. She looks 15-16 in that still.

  • Erin

The front view of him and Katniss on that magazine cover i’m not a huge fan of, he looks kind of wimpy and unattractive. But when he is whispering in Katniss’s ear you can see the cocky look on his face and i can just picture the sugar-cube scene!

  • Lee

YES. Gosh I love this series. This looks to be fantastic. I really am looking forward to Claflin as Finnick.

  • http://twitter.com/emilyecstasyTM Emily Bryan

    These pics are amazing! <3

  • Vera

THAT CAN’T BE THE SUGAR CUBE SCENE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IN THE SUGAR CUBE SCENE FINNICK MUST PRACTICALLY NAKED WITH HIS FISHNET!!!!
    AM I RIGHT?????????????

    • Savanah

The interview confirms that the fishnet outfit will make an appearance. The Finnick and Katniss picture above is actually from the training center when Finnick gets close to her (you can tell by their outfits and the background). :)

  • Me

From the cover I was weireded out but that sugar cube picture is perfect. Also, all of this feels a lot more mature. I like it.

  • Bellanesssiecullen

It super messed you that they are bringing gale into the arena !!! It stupid the hunger games isn’t about who katniss will choose that’s twilight. The hunger games trilogy is about who katniss has to fight

    • Hannah Christian

      what?

    • Afan

      That’s not Gale! That’s FINNICK

READ before you start making dumb comments

  • Corin Boswell

So Snow is going for the Seneca Crane look in this movie? LOL

  • Gloryan

….hes a way to young for this charackter ….

    • Linda

He’s OLDER than Finnick. Finnick is 24 and he’s 26. It’s called terrible photoshopping.

  • http://twitter.com/akacj7 Caroline J.

prim’s had a little growth spurt, hmm??

  • dariq

i dont get . why finnick is carrying this weapon, it nothing looks like ea trident, like it was claimed in the bock, furthermore it has 4 spikes. and the uniforms are supposed to be blue.

But the photos are looking great. I can’t wait to watch that film.

  • peace

    he looks hot

  • Fluffy-cow49

I know that it’s gonna be hard not to compare the two….but I really don’t want this to be a Jacob vs. Edward scenario for Katniss and Gale/Peeta.

  • elletnah

    1. That is not the remake center. You can see weapons and the game makers behind them and they are in identical (well kinda, male and female versions) outfits that we saw on the first few days of filming. They are in the training center.

    2. Sam looks absolutely amazing as Finnick, his hair his grin, everything is perfect and I can’t wait to hear in his american accent, “Want a sugar cube?”

  • http://www.facebook.com/annso.eich Annso Eich

I like the arena gear, but, well, I imagined Finnick really different and Plutarch as well.

  • Sheechiibii

So excited! I love the shot with Katniss and Finnick. All these shots looks pretty amazing. Katniss’ mother doesn’t look very slum-like compared to Prim but I suppose it doesn’t really matter.
