American Merlin fans, did you enjoy the premiere episode of season 5? See a video interview in which Colin Morgan explains how they filmed it!
The first episode of Merlin‘s fifth and final season, “Arthur’s Bane, Part 1,” aired last Friday on the SyFy Channel. This Friday we get the second part of the episode, but that’s still a few days away – luckily there’s a short interview with Colin Morgan to help us get through the week!
The first episode of season 5, Morgan explains, manages to expand the world of Merlin in a way that hasn’t been done before, by taking the characters far north up into a snowy area for a dramatic confrontation wit Morgana.
But while filming the beautiful scenes in the snow, the actors were anything but cold: Morgan reveals that the episode was shot on the hottest day of the year, up in the Brecon Beacons (author’s note: this happens to be a great place for camping) in Wales. They created the snow from bits of wet paper, and had the actors film all the scenes in a very small area.
Morgan also calls the episode the “strongest opener” the show has ever had. When he read the script, “it felt like the show had definitely shifted in a new direction.” Do you agree? “Arthur’s Bane” definitely had some epic character moments, not only for Arthur, Gwen and Merlin but also for the knights. And Mordred (Alexander Vlahos) was introduced, too!
Merlin returns Friday at 10/9c with “Arthur’s Bane, Part 2”! Watch the promo and sneak peek for the episode right here on Hypable.
Don’t forget that Merlin has been nominated for two British National Television Awards! The series has been nominated in the Drama category while Colin Morgan is up against the likes of Matt Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch for Best Drama Actor! It’s by viewer votes, so make sure you take the time to vote and help Merlin pick up some awards for its final season!
