New Girl break out star Max Greenfield has been nominated for his first Golden Globe and took the time to talk with us about the nomination, the romance between Schmidt and Cece, douchebaggery, and more!
Greenfield seemed somewhat shocked yet honored to be nominated for a Golden Globe. Saying that it would be fun just to participate in the event. He says, “All of a sudden they’re like well, the nominees are Ed Harris and Schmidt from New Girl. So, to hear that was kind of— I don’t know, it felt really nice. It always feels nice to be recognized for the work that you do, and especially in such a kind of cool and big awards show like the Golden Globes, it’s going to be a lot of fun just to participate in an event like that.” He also said that at the time of the announcement he was “very much asleep.”
Like other New Girl stars, Greenfield is rooting for his character’s love life. When asked whether or not he’d like to see Schmidt with Cece, he responded, “I think there’s always a chance. And personally, yes, I’d like to see them back together. You try to play the character and make it as personal as possible and at this point, Schmidt is working so hard to get back with her that I think I personally kind of want to just win already.”
Another hot topic for Greenfield’s character is the douche-bag jar Schmidt frequently fills with dollar bills. Greenfield joked that sometimes in life he’s done things to earn a dollar in the jar. “It’s usually just dumb things that my wife will just be like, ‘What’s wrong with you?’” he says.
Greenfield also teased that Schmidt will be feeling some white guilt in an upcoming episode that will have Winston playing a joke on him. Schmidt will see that Winston is hanging out with his African American friends more, and Schmidt assumes that Winston feels as though he’s being held back at the loft and can’t fully be himself. According to Greenfield, this will result in a wild adventure. “He tries to, in his most idiotic of ways, tries to give Winston an opportunity to really spread his wings within the loft,” says Greenfield. “Winston quickly realizes what he’s doing and how stupid he is, and kind of plays along with him and gets Schmidt really riled up.”
