A picture recently taken on the set of NBC’s Smash unveils a large Bombshell casting change. Be forewarned: major season 2 spoilers follow!

As seen in this picture snapped by Hollywoodlife.com, Ivy (Megan Hilty) will replace Karen (Katherine McPhee) as the iconic role of Marilyn Monroe in the TV show’s fictional Broadway production!

Two other crew changes should be noted, in that Tom (Christian Borle) will replace Derek (Jack Davenport) as director, with Derek being demoted to choreographer.

What could have happened to Karen to allow Ivy to reclaim the lead role of the show? And did the Tom and Derek feud lead to the crew change?

The last we saw of Ivy, she was downing pills during Karen’s preview performance as Marilyn. Derek and Tom’s major argument, in which Tom revealed that Derek’s father slept with the director who badmouthed Tom’s work in an earlier production, led to a rocky road for the two.

If one thing’s for sure, it’s that we’re VERY interested to see how all of this will go down once season 2′s plot unfolds. One theory is that this is a dream sequence. Ivy would most likely be dreaming about this, but that also brings into question why there’d be a such a specific crew change with Derek and Tom.

What do you think will cause such drastic changes? Chime in the comments below!

NBC recently released a four-minute trailer for season 2, featuring much of Grammy award-winning actress Jennifer Hudson. In response, Hypable’s Smash podcast did a frame-by-frame recap to catch all of the finer details of the trailer. Watch the trailer below and listen to Smash Chat’s “Not a Piano Player” here.

Smash returns on NBC on Feb. 5 at 9 p.m. EST for a two-hour premiere. After the premiere, it will maintain its new Tuesday night slot, but will air at 10 p.m. EST.

If season 1 was about Karen being the victim, then season 2 is going to see Ivy take that part, from what I’ve seen…

I really think this could be Ivy having a dream. Didn’t we see Ivy on the poster of Sean Hayes New Musical?

I hope Ivy takes that part.

I’m conflicted about the Ivy/Karen war. I like Megan Hilty as an actress better than Katherine McPhee, and she’s definitely a better Marilyn, but I can’t help being on the side of Karen, because she’s the ‘nice’ character.

I say let Ivy have the part even though Karen was outstanding as Marilyn in the season 1 finale of Smash! I want Karen to be in a more current show with more ‘youthful, upbeat, and radio friendly songs’ and more current dance routines! We ALL saw that Katharine is the REAL DANCER of the two!

I think that the dream theory is probably the best. However, my thoughts are that if it isn’t a dream, that maybe with Karen and Derek left to go to the new competing show we’ve heard about.

Ivy as Marilyn is the only logical choice for the universe to continue as it should. If Karen ultimately went out on that stage with her dress hanging off of her completely inappropriate figure, I would have instigated mutiny

I don’t like the drama on smash, it gets in the way of the awesome songs…

Faced with an inkling that Bombshell may not happen, Karen once again shows her (dis)loyalty and lack of team spirit by defecting to show #2, which Derek prostrates himself to aid her with. As it allows her to sing things she can actually, you know, sing, and prove that she’s star enough to loft a show from nothing, Bombshell becomes an inspirationless dolldrum for the boobies left to drag it into mediocre acclaim. Meanwhile, of course, the girl who couldn’t juggle an ensemble role with a part time waitressing gig will headline two shows, because diva wondergirl is not miraculously professional.

GO IVY. She has her flaws, but has always been my absolute favourite Marilyn. YOU GO GIRL.

Before the show goes off the air let Derek and Karen get together. It would make the show so much better. What is she doing with that young kid? He looks like her son.
Awful to put her with him. She needs to be with Derek. Also Derek needs to go back
    to Bombshell.
