Breaking Bad series creator Vince Gilligan spoke at length with Vulture recently, and what ensued was an interesting discussion on how Gilligan and his writers are preparing to wrap the show.
The interview was conducted while Gilligan worked on the third to last script of the series. He dropped a few reminders about common questions: There will not be a Breaking Bad movie, for example (“It’s very much designed to have a beginning, middle, and end and then to exist no more.”). He also unveiled interesting storyline tidbits, like how Hank wasn’t initially conceived as being the man who’d bring Walt down (the series 5 finale ended with Hank connecting Walt with Gus).
But the most fascinating part of his interview with Vulture was on how he wants to end Walt’s storyline. “It just makes sense to me that bad people should get punished and good people should be rewarded. I know it doesn’t work like that in real life, but there’s always that yearning. Oddly enough, I don’t feel any real pressure to pay off the characters, morally speaking.”
So even though he understands Walt needs to die because “bad people should get punished,” he’s happy to admit that it won’t necessarily end that way.
Gilligan has created such an evil character who’s gotten away with so much for so long that we feel he will get away in the end. That was Walt’s mission from the start, and we’ll see him carry it out. Do you agree?
Breaking Bad returns this July to AMC for a final eight episodes. Visit Vulture to read the complete interview.
