The Angel of Death visited Briarcliff last night on American Horror Story episode 2×10 “The Name Game” and took two major characters with her. Today, Ryan Murphy is discussing the episode, their deaths, and scoops a bit on his ideas for season 3!
When Ryan Murphy sat down with Entertainment Weekly he had a lot of explaining to do after last night’s drama-packed episode “The Name Game,” which included two character deaths and the destruction of another’s mind. The Monsignor threw Sister Eunice over a railing after she came out of her possession for a moment to tell him she was tired of trying to fight the devil. Dr. Arden also bit the dust, literally, when he climbed in with Sister Eunice’s body into the crematorium. Sadly, none of that happened before Sister Eunice had electroshock therapy preformed on Sister Jude who now really belongs in the Asylum.
Many are now wondering, did the devil die when Sister Eunice died? Murphy explains that we’ve seen the last of the devil, as he didn’t want the devil to escape into someone else. Why did Sister Eunice have to die in order to get rid of the devil? Murphy wanted to show that the only thing that could take down the devil was essentially another one: “I liked the idea that the only thing more powerful than the devil is the Angel of Death, which is actually the cousin of the devil.” And in case you were wondering Lily Rabe did her own stunts in that scene.
Like Sister Eunice, Dr. Arden also chose his own death in this episode. Fans might almost pity him in this moment where he can’t live without what seemed to be the love of his life. Murphy explains that the heartbreak was just too much to bear for the doctor, saying, “I think when he felt that part of his heart open up and to have it close again was devastating. I also think the image of a Nazi doctor going into an oven is sort of a brilliant metaphor of him literally paying. Obviously, he’s a terrible character but I thought his end was very justified and somewhat poetic.”
Although Sister Jude didn’t physically die, is seems like part of her has after her character undergoes electroshock therapy. That was the plan all along, according to Murphy; the idea was to show the downfall of the mental healthy system through Sister Jude. As bad as the Asylum has been up to this point Murphy wants to show just how bad it had gotten in the past, “As you’ll see in episode 10 and episode 11, what happened to many of these institutions is they ran out of money and they sold them to the state and the state began to use them as warehouses for not just people with mental illness but people with really bad health care problems.”
Murphy also gave some clues about the next couple of episodes. He teased that Lana’s threat of Dr. Thredson being back at Briarcliff will be resolved next week in “Spilt Milk.” Fans will also learn more about Grace’s baby, what it is, and how it came to be. Plus there will be a scene with Dylan McDermott (playing Johnny Thredson) and a hooker that Murphy describes as, “most disturbing opening scene we’ve done ever.”
It seems like Murphy might need a bit of a break from the horrors they’ve revealed this season. When asked if next season would be lighter than the current he responded, “I don’t think anything could ever be as dark as the mental health care system in our country. I sorta feel like for the third version I want to do something that’s a little bit more ‘evil glamour.'” Fans should also expect to see a romance similar to that of Tate and Violet as Murphy says he wants to another Romeo and Juliet-type love story. In a finale tease about season 3 he said, “We’re contemplating shooting it in a place in the country where true horror has been. We’ve got lots of delicious plans.”
