Seven films have been shortlisted for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 2013 Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.
Unlike most categories, only three films will earn nominations when they are announced on January 10, 2013.
The shortlisted films are:
Clearly the biggest snub here is Cloud Atlas, which, while not always perfect, was largely successful in transforming such renowned movie stars as Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant into other genders and ethnicities. Otherwise, it’s hard to have a qualm with this list as it will be quite interesting when the list is narrowed down to just three.
One has to assume Lincoln will be on the list, and the makeup work in Men in Black 3 was quite astounding. What film fills that third slot? Could it be The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for its extraordinary work on the dwarves? Maybe Looper for transforming Joseph Gordon-Levitt into a young Bruce Willis?
The official press release states:
On Saturday, January 5, all members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the seven shortlisted films. Following the screenings, members will vote to nominate three films for final Oscar consideration.
We’ll have the official nominations list for the 85th Academy Awards on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT.
