A Hypable reader shares their thoughts about the Merlin series finale “The Diamond of the Day, Part 2.”

For Merlin fans, “The Diamond of the Day, Part 2″ is the end of an era that scored so many dedicated fans. Whilst we pondered our favourite scenes in Hypable’s A Month of Merlin, the theories began of how the show would end.

We’ve been bombarded by interviews from the cast promoting the final episodes, and yet I think Alexander Vlahos best describe the final episode when he called it a “platonic love story.”

To be honest, I was particularly worried about how it would end, considering that the writers had so much to do in the last few episodes. However, I enjoyed the beginning of the final episode, as Emrys arrives and saves the knights at the Battle of Camlann – although I did find Mordred’s death much too quick for a character long told to bring about Arthur’s demise.

But with him out of the way, so began Merlin’s journey to cure Arthur. And I was relieved, that once again, just in time, Merlin would save the day.

A “platonic love story” best describes the rest of the episode, with the majority focusing on Merlin and Arthur, but also providing some screen time for the rest of the cast. I had always imagined that Merlin would reveal his magic a few episodes towards the end, to give Arthur time to understand and accept this, yet I feel that it was appropriately handled in the episode.

Disbelief, shock, anger and finally acceptance showed on Arthur’s face, after Merlin is, at first, unsuccessful of convincing Arthur. “I’m a sorcerer. I have magic,” he said, only for Arthur to laugh it off, saying, “I would have known,” and as the audience we just smile and shake our heads.

Most importantly though, I must acknowledge the extraordinary acting talents of Colin Morgan and Bradley James. They handled the emotions of their characters so well in these scenes, that they can’t help but bring the fans to tears. It was evident in these last moments, that the bond of their friendship was so strong, even as Arthur accepts his fate, Merlin is unable to. Finally, before his death, Arthur says, “Thank you,” an acknowledgment of all which Merlin has done for him.

At Arthur’s end, we discover the true force of Morgan’s talent, for who couldn’t be moved by his obvious anguish and heartbreak over Arthur’s death? To the end, Merlin keeps on hoping that he can save Arthur, and even calls on Kilgarrah to help him get Arthur to Avalon. Yet, the Dragon states that this is Arthur’s fate, he is the “Once and Future King” and he will rise again.

I was shocked at this development and the brilliance of the interpretation of the legend, that Arthur would rise again and Merlin would be waiting for his old friend. Of course, I was confused as the Golden Era wasn’t very long, but perhaps in time, the writers will explain. We can only hope.

Of course the rest of the cast provided memorable moments, from Gwen’s (Angel Coulby) guess that Merlin was the sorcerer at the battle, to Leon (Rupert Young) standing steadfast alongside the new ruler. From Gaius (Richard Wilson) embracing Merlin as a father would a son before embarking on a dangerous journey, to Gwaine (Eoin Macken) and Percival (Tom Hopper) confronting Morgana (Katie McGrath) and leading to Gwaine’s death.

However, for someone so powerful, Morgana’s death at the hands of Merlin was also much too quick, for would she really let her guard down so much around the man who was to be “her destiny and her doom”? Gwen’s coronation itself was bittersweet, whilst the Queen would be a wise ruler with her faithful friends (that are still alive) beside her, her rise to ruler came from such devastating circumstances.

Thanks to the cast for such an incredible journey. Even though Merlin is over, it will remain in our hearts forever.

And we are left with an image we cannot forget, as we see Emrys (albeit in more modern times) searching for his old friend, so that they can be together once more.

I am still so so angry at the ending. Everybody dying… I can’t really watch any more episodes because it makes me too sad. Geez, what has this show done to me?!

    • http://www.facebook.com/jessica.rice.5011 Jessica Rice

Makes it so hard to watch… seeing Arthur actually pass on in Merlin’s arms… ugh… *choking back a little sob there*

    • mtlss

I’m very surprised at how intensely it made me feel! I wasn’t expecting to get so emotional! Still not over it.

  • Eliza

Argh, I thought my fanfic binge had distracted me from the end… After reading this, I can say that I’m definitely still not over it.

  • Lauren

Still in denial that its all over. TOO SOON! Loved how you described the audience just smiling and shaking their heads when Arthur said “i would have known.” I just hope we will get to see more of Colin and Bradley because they are so talented and so young. So much potential! Why did it have to end?!?!?

    • Sarah

Arthur to laugh it off, saying, “I would have known,” and as the audience we just smile and shake our heads.
Yeah! That line is really wonderful!

And you know what? I think it’s a good thing that we can share our grief.
Reading comments and sometimes writing brings me a bit of relief. To know what other think about the end and the untold future makes me feel normal, because I was not sure that it would be normal crying and sobbing even days after the finale.
I was hoping maybe there would be an interview with writers after this end.
I want them to explain, what exactly they were thinking? What is the point of turning a lovely story to an absolute tragedy!!
i watched an episode of series one today, and Arthur’s word was ringing in my ear “Thank you” .

I mean this was so Unfair!

I am still in shock about what happened to Arthur. I was not expecting this. Well maybe I was but hoping that we would live. :-( It was very hard to watch. :-(

Still cannot accept Morgana’s death. It was such a joke. The final confirmation that Moragana’s story and Katie’s talent were wasted on such poor writing. Just an epic fail on all counts.

The finale wasn’t perfect by any means, but I still think they did the show justice. At first I was really mad at the way Mordred and Morgana’s deaths were rushed through so quickly, and especially Morgana’s. I felt like after “With All My Heart,” the show was really building up to some big final scene for her, perhaps even giving us a glimpse of a possible redemption or of the fact that the old Morgana was still in there somewhere. They did such a complete 180 on her character when she turned evil, and while I get why she’d hate Uther, I never bought her blind hatred of Arthur.

But I still appreciate the finale for being so muted and quietly emotional, pushing all other characters but Merlin, Arthur and Gwen to the side… because by doing that the writers really honoured Merlin and Arthur’s relationship in a way which made their entire journey feel worth it. I was expecting some big epic battle, but I think the way they closed it out made the episode a lot more memorable and powerful in the long run. It was so intimate and personal, and I think it touched a lot of people in a much deeper way than they were expecting. I know I’m still a little shaken up by the intensity of it, a week later.

      • Gary65

But there was no ending. There was just Merlin walking the earth alone for eternity. That’s not an ending.

        • http://hypable.com Selina

You’re right. It’s a beginning. And isn’t that what the Merlin creators always said the show would be? ;)

  • Joe

I both enjoyed and hated the last episodes. I guess I had higher expectations.

I thought there was a lot of potential for more seasons, but thats beside the point.

I expected more magical battles, especially between Morgana and Merlin. I expected a large battle at Camelot with the dragon. For Morgana, Arthur and Mordred to die from a sword was the result of terrible writing with no imagination. There should have been more episodes to finish it off properly instead of all those lousy Gwen episodes (where she is brainwashed)..

This might sound stupid but did anyone else see the parallel with the show Merlin and Christianity. The reason I say this is that I found it interesting how Arthur is like Jesus Christ and he died and he will return and Merlin would be like the symbol of Christians as a whole. Morgana would definitely be Satan because he was a “fallen Angel”. I don’t know I might be thinking way to in to this, but I just noticed it and saw this parallel

    • JB

      I couldn’t agree more.

    • JB

That’s how I saw since the very beginning.

  • Tiffany

I just watched the Youtube video “Everything Wrong with The Dark Knight Rises in 3 minutes or less” and laughed so hard I started to cry. Anyway I started thinking it would be great if someone made one of those videos for the finale of Merlin or of the show Merlin. Those 3 minute or less videos are loving made by true blue fans. It might be good therapy for everyone unsatisfied with the ending of the show. If I had the episodes I whip up a “Everything wrong with the Merlin finale in 3 minutes or less” myself. Or maybe I’d do an Honest Trailer for the Finale of Merlin like Youtube’s ScreenJunkie’s do for various movies like Twilght or Titanic. I’m sure there’s someone creative out there who could make one.

I am FIRIOUS! A crappy show like how I met your mother goes up to “8 SEASONS” and then Merlin ends with 5 and a terrible ending? There are alot of things left unexplained and un-done in the show! How will the kingdoms be united? What’s so great about Arthur? Did magic take its place? Did Merlin fail or fulfill the prophecy? Emotional, but terrible, terrible ending. Actors deserve the best awards, however writers shouldn’t even get paid….

And why a trilogy? Why not a new season?

    • Ruth

I agree wholeheartedly with your comments. Please sign the petition on facebook for Merlin to return. We are all praying that, standing together we can get a series 6.

      • Kat

I dont think there is anything you can do to get another season. Arthur is dead, that’s how the legend ends. I dont see how they can bring him back without it being unbelievable.

  • Beth

There are talks of their being a three part movie or a continuation series Bradley James turned down season 6 as he wanted to leave on a high, and Colin Morgan said it would leave fans disappointed if they did a movie. I think they should do a continuation where Merlin finds Arthur again as he has risen from Avalon and it should have all the same characters in because although many were satisfied with the ending many were not and they will agree with me that they should do it but with the same characters this will give them a big fan base to start off with and fans will love it. I have basically grown up with Merlin and it was one of the only few things I looked forward to on Saturday nights and now that has been taken away i am quite sad. I also think that they left the end open to a continuation as it showed Arthur’s hand catching Excalibur not the lady of the lake’s and Merlin is still waiting for him plus the dragon said Arthur will rise again #theonceandfutureking

In more modern times Merlin was’nt searching for Arthur because he pretty much knows were Arthur is. He was just keeping watch over Arthur’s grave in Avalon and uses his magic to hide Arthur whenever anyone gets near to finding him.

Honestly, this is a poor tragic ending, just like “Sea God”. But I really felt sorry for merlin. It is really a bad ending for a series like merlin.

  • Lauren

What do you guys think Merlin is doing now? Of course he will continue to work with gaius but without arthur to spend all of his time with i think he will become a little lost. I cant see him serving anyone else but arthur.

  • GloryB

Hi am so disappointed to know that this is the end of the series MERLIN. We really enjoyed watching Merlin. There is not much on TV these days and looked forward to the next episode of MERLIN. It is too bad that the writers decided to end the series as there are not much scifi series anymore. Smallville, Stargate Atlantis, Caprica, and now Merlin. The only one left is Supernatural. I do have to say that the writers did an awesome job, but it was too soon for Merlin to be over. Will the writers and actors ever consider bringing back Merlin?

    Murther forever.

  • snowcat60

Morgana said to Arthur, you may have won the battle but you lost the war. In actuality, he lost the battle but won the war.

I hated the ending, and almost feel like i wasted all that time watching merlin

  • severus<3lily

Did Merlin end up at Hogwarts?

  • Merlin4ever

The ending was like Merlin and Freya, all over again. I wished it didn’t end like that. I was so looking forward to see how future Albion looked like.

  • Jennifer S

I actually though the quick ending for Morgana fit well. She was too focused on gloating over Arthur to remember that Merlin is her enemy. Remember, it is only recently that she found out who he is versus years of believing he is just a servant. Also, my guess is that she may have been prepared for Emrys to kill her using magic (maybe she had some protective charms and shields) but this proved useless against Excalibur.

  • Jyllian Lu

I’m not certain if I really want Merlin and Arthur to be back on the basis of Arthur’s resurrection, but with such a talented cast, I really do hope that Colin and Bradley will one day return together on screen for another platonic love story of some sorts.

I realise that BBC has a way of making the fans wait in terms of years for such a good fandom. If I can stand waiting for the next Sherlock, then Merlin would be worth the wait as well.

  • mhayen

i am still be hoping and waiting that the writer of this very impressive tale will do the season 6.. i really love Merlin series a lot that i can’t sleep til’ i will finish the whole episode… God Bless…

    • jennifer

      Will there be Season 6?

  • mhayen

Arthur is the “Once and Future King” and he will rise again as per Kilgarrah, therefore all Merlin’s fanatics will be expecting the Season 6 for sure!!!! Writer, please do the next season for us… :)

  • terryroth

I saw the end online before it aired here in the US … I refused to watch any further, I felt betrayed by the whole series. What was the point, there was no camelot, Aurther wasn’t saved so much that wasn’t done and then to see Merlin in the present day still waiting … just twist the knife in our backs! I’ve looked up the names of the freakin writers and I will never get vested in anything else they have any part of. They left us with no hope for a movie of the week or anything.

  • EV

Saw the final episode. The scene where Merlin crys out to Kilgarrah for the last time was fantastic: I usually shrug off TV shows but I actually felt Merlin’s pain. I felt something. Good acting for one so young.

  • Fabbarry

Very we’ll said. An emotional super journey.we shall miss it.
