Thatgamecompany’s Journey has received critical acclaim and is sure to be a part of many game of the year discussions, but it is also receiving recognition from outside the industry.
Journey has been nominated for a Grammy Award, marking the first time a full video game score has been recognized.
“I really don’t have words right now,” a shocked Austin Wintory, composer of the indie game’s score, tweeted after learning it had been nominated in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category.
Wintory faces stiff competition for the award, squaring off against acclaimed modern composers like Hanz Zimmer (The Dark Knight Rises) and John Williams (The Adventures of Tin-Tin) in the category.
While this marks the first time a full score has received a nomination, it is not the first time video game music has been recognized by the Grammy Awards. Christopher Tin won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist in 2011 for his song “Baba Yetu,” which was originally composed for Civilization IV.
You can listen to the score yourself, along with more of Wintory’s work, at the composers SoundCloud or purchase it on iTunes.
Journey received critical acclaim for both its art direction and the emotional experience of playing the game when it released for the PlayStation 3 in March.
