Homeland‘s tenth episode of season 2 aired on Sunday evening, with Carrie going missing and Brody aiding the death of the Vice President. Where will Homeland go from here?
Homeland returned with another thrilling episode. “Broken Hearts” revealed more tension, aggression and dispair with Carrie and Brody being the centre of the episode. We pick up relatively quickly on last week’s episode, with Saul learning more and more about what Estes is up to behind his back. Peter Quinn, who has always been on the shady side, is a Black Ops mercenary working for Dahl and Estes. This inevitably throws out the questions of Quinn being a double agent, but adds more fuel to the fire as to why Estes doesn’t trust Saul. Furthermore, this is enhanced by the conversation between Dahl and Saul in the restaurant.
Meanwhile, Carrie is sideswiped by a silver SUV shortly after a phone call to Brody. It comes as a complete shock, as Carrie is just casually pulling away in her car and turning up her favourite jazz tunes on the car radio. It’s no wonder that the SUV belongs to Abu Nazir, and the episode’s plot begins. Carrie is taken to what appears to be a plant where she is zip-tied to some piping, being held captive by Nazir. But what does Nazir want?
Nazir engages with Brody via a video call, showing Carrie tied up, with grueling cuts on her face, blood streaming down. Brody’s panicked. He’s gone to ‘stretch his legs’ in order to take the phone call, diverting himself away from the Secret Service’s watchful eye in the safe house. Nazir wants a serial number found on the Vice President’s pacemaker kit in his office, because we learn of the Vice President suffering from a bad heart, and has a pacemaker fitted. “Did you think it would be easy, that you could betray me and walk away?” exclaims Nazir on the phone. Carrie is dead, or the Vice President is, and it’s Brody decision to make.
Brody stalls back and forth, before finally giving in to Nazir’s demands. He gives in after seeing a gun pointed straight at the ever-worried face of Carrie. As soon as Brody accepts Nazir’s offer, of finding the serial number, the calls ends. A perplexed Brody, makes an emergency appointment to see the Vice President.
Driven by the Secret Service, Brody arrives at the Vice President’s house. Guarded by Secret Service, Brody sweeps through the security checks and into the house where he learns that the Vice President is in a meeting. Brody jokes with one of the guards, before quickly sensing an opportunity to find the serial number on the pacemaker kit. He asks where he can find the bathroom, and then stealthily moves through the house and into the Vice President’s office. Stumbling around, Brody looks around the bookcase before finding the pacemaker kit in the bookcase drawer. The serial number is so small that Brody needs a magnifying glass to find it and read it. Brody phones Nazir, cautiously watching the door, hearing footsteps in the corridor. Brody, shakily, demands that Carrie is let free before handing over the serial number. Brody swears on Isa’s life that he will give up the number if Carrie is let go first. Nazir cuts the cable ties and videos Carrie running away from the industrial plant. Carrie escapes and tries to flag down a car to get in touch with the CIA. Brody hands over the serial number via text, and Nazir forward’s it on to his programmer.
In a hurry, Brody stashes the pacemaker kit back into the drawer and locks it shut. Immediately, the Vice President enters the room and greets Brody. They have a drawn out discussion about why Brody is here to see the Vice President in such urgency. Nazir’s programmer begins to tap away at the keyboard. Brody informs the Vice President that he wishes to stand down from the running of Congress. Nazir’s programmer finishes his code, and sends the signal. The Vice President begins to stutter and choke, as the argument becomes heated. His vitals are beginning to drop, as Nazir’s programmer watches his laptop screen. Brody explains his withdrawal as, “wanting to feel clean again” and that he no longer supports the decisions made by the Vice President. As the Vice President’s vitals continually drop, the Vice President struggles and kneels down. Holding his chest, the Vice President darts for the phone, but Brody pulls it away, watching him slip into death. “Call a Doctor,” out cries the Vice Chancellor. “I don’t think so,” Brody says. “You still don’t get it do you? I’m killing you.”
The Vice President is dead, as the heart monitor flat-lines. But that isn’t the cliffhanger. Carrie gets in touch with the CIA and tells them her location. As she waits for a pickup, something is praying on Carrie’s mind, and it’s Nazir. Carrie races back into the compound, and tries to retrace her steps. She follows the sounds of what appears to be Nazir’s men. She finds a door and moves closer.
Are Nazir’s men behind that door? Find out on this Sunday’s Homeland over on Showtime at 10PM ET/PT. Check out this week’s trailer below, for episode 11, ‘The Motherf****r with a Turban’.
