The fate of the X:Men: First Class sequel has been rocky since the departure of director Matthew Vaughn, but the return of X-Men director Bryan Singer and this brand new development heralds a bright future for the franchise.
We should have known by the title of X-Men: days of Future Past that some time travel would be involved, but it seems that 20th Century Fox is taking full advantage of Singer’s new position to secure even more connections to his original vision.
According to a tweet from the director (via Coming Soon), X-Men co-stars and best-bros Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart will supplement the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 & @sirpatstew are joining the cast of #XMEN #DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorX More to come…

This is exciting news for fans of the original film and new fans alike, since the addition confirms that all five X-Men films exist on the same plane (Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine cameo notwithstanding), and it also gives a tremendous clue as to how the film will look and feel.
Frankly, we’re thrilled to hear that 20th Century Fox is attempting the crossover since Stewart and McKellen’s portrayals of Professor X and Magneto have been lauded by both fans and critics alike. Their addition can only mean good things for the franchise that already comes packed with stars like Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender.
Singer has also put fans on the lookout for “more to come,” which might mean more in the way of cameo appearances, or even a tidbit of the story, which is said to be heavily based off of the highly influential X-Men story arc of the same name.
We hear what you’re saying. Wolverine cameo. Frankly, even though the inclusion of Jackman’s Wolverine would be a neat addition to the star-studded cast, part of what made First Class so special was the focus on the characters that weren’t Wolverine.
With The Wolverine coming out next Summer, one would hope that he might stay put while the other mutants have their awesome universe-crossing meet n’ greet.
