After launching November 18, Nintendo has sold over 400,000 Wii U consoles in its first week on the North American market.
Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed the sales numbers as part of the 1.2 million hardware units Nintendo sold over the past week in an interview with CNET.
“Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock,” he said. “Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as the product hits retail, they’re selling out immediately.”
The original Wii sold over 600,000 units in its launch week and was sold out for months after, something the company plans to avoid this time around.
“You couldn’t walk into a retailer and buy a Wii until spring of 2009. We’ve certainly learned many lessons from that and we are replenishing retailers more quickly this time around,” Fils-Aime said. “We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible. It’s driven by consumer response.”
In addition to the Wii U, 300,000 Wii consoles, 275,000 DS handhelds and 250,000 3DS handhelds made up the 1.2 million hardware units sold.
In other Nintendo news, a rumor is making the rounds the company will launch a miniature Wii console redesign, possibly as early as December.
