A funny quote from Martin Freeman, who’s been in the public eye as of late thanks to major roles in Sherlock and the upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey surfaced today.

Freeman is a British actor who, unlike many others in his field, wasn’t invited for a role in Harry Potter. “I was one of the only people who wasn’t in ‘Harry Potter’, and I’m still annoyed by that,” he said to The Sunday Times Magazine.

His role as Bilbo Baggins may be his largest fantasy film to date and will surely give Harry Potter a run for its money.

So this begs the question…

What character could Martin Freeman have played in Harry Potter?

We could’ve seen him in a role as Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh) or perhaps Professor Slughorn (Jim Broadbent). How about you?

Freeman will show off his skills as a fantasy film star in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, opening in theaters December 14. It is the first in The Hobbit trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. Meanwhile, Steven Moffat’s Sherlock series three is expected to begin filming sometime in 2013. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the lead detective while Freeman is Watson.

Speaking of Sherlock, check out our infographic that uses 18 factors to help you determine when you know for sure you’re a fan of the British television series.

I think he would have been a good Fudge, or maybe Grindewald? Im not sure but i think he’s to short to be Lockhart or Slughorn.

  • rsprague

That’s tough one. I think he might’ve even made a good Quirrell. He does awkward and quirky very well.

I think Kenneth Branagh was so perfect for Lockhart, and I looove Jim Broadbent, plus Slughorn is older than Freeman would have been when shooting.

  • Lucija

I think he would of been a great Lupin

    • Lucy

      YES, Lupin!

    • rayne

That’s what I was going to say!! LUPIN YES.

    • crippletoe

That’s what I was going to say too!!!

  • PtrGeek

He’s too you and slim for Slughorn, and, sorry, but not good looking enough for Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh wasn’t either). I think he would have made an excellent Mundungus Fletcher. The guy they had in the role was very poor casting. He’d worked well as Lupin too.

I have a feeling that he could have been a good Peeves. An admittedly more sarcastic Peeves than we’re used to, but Peeves nonetheless. It also explains why he wasn’t asked – his character wasn’t in the films!

    • Sophia

      This is a wonderful idea!

  • iPynki

What? What do you mean he wasn’t in Potter? I thought he made a wonderful Charlie Weasley.

    • sammylovegood

lol he would have made a great Charlie!!

    • Holly

      OMG, yes!

if he were a teenager i’d cast him as Ron ASAP.

    • HarryHungerAvatar12

      Rupert Grint was better.

I don’t know who he would’ve played, but this sudden revelation that I never thought about is disappointing. I would’ve loved to have seen him in Harry Potter.

I love Martin Freeman and I’m pretty sure I would have been alright with him playing any role in HP. BUT, go on this quick adventure with me: Peter Pettigrew. I’ve always kind of disliked the way they made Moony, Padfoot, and Prongs all handsome and thin then Pettigrew is this bumbling idiot with thinning hair and bad teeth. In order for MWPP to become such good friends and for James and Lily to trust Wormtail so much that they made him their secret-keeper, he must have fit in with the Mauraders. What I love about that plot arc was that it was a time of distrust and even your very closest friends might betray you (friends, not that weird looking heavy guy that follows you around). It’s about shades of grey. HP cast Timothy Spall, an admittedly fantastic actor, who is easy to differentiate from Oldman and Thewlis. It is easy to villify him because he is different, but you lose the subtlety of his grasp for security and power over fear. /rant.
    Martin Freeman for Peter Pettigrew!

Pettigrew wasn’t chosen because he was trusted but because they couldn’t believe he could possibly have the balls to turn them over or that Voldemort would be interested in having him plus the general appearance thing was from Rowling she made evil characters ugly Voldemort, Dursleys and very attractive people vain or shallow (Diggory being the exception) all the good people were ‘average’ looking (except Ginny) and they saw the beauty in each other individually like Ron/Hermione

    • oblyviate

but, you’ve got to remember that Pettigre lived as a rat for 11 years – he wasnt brushing his teeth, probably not getting much exercise etc. his hair was thinning because he was stressed/sick from Sirius-worry for that last year… so of course, he won’t look his best. and not all friends grow up think together.

He was chosen mostly because they thought no-one in their right minds would suspect that they’d make their cowardly little tag-along their secret keeper. They turned down Dumbledore and Sirius because they would be too obvious as targets.

While I love HP, it drives me nuts that it falls into the old bad=ugly trope very frequently. It is something we teach children at a young age in our stories and sends a pretty bad message overall. I know part of Harry Potter’s charm is the whimsey in which Names=character’s personalities, however having the physical appearance match that always bothered me. (Malfoys being the exception to the rule, of course)

  • Brian

    Arthur Weasley?

  • lego5ker

    Ludo Bagman

    • Katie

First character that popped into my head.

  • njandro625

Slap on some prosthetic attachments and a habit, he would have made a great Fat Friar.

  • http://hypable.com Selina

I feel ya, Martin. I’m also annoyed that I wasn’t in Harry Potter.

    • http://twitter.com/Tygridia Tygridia

Selina, there’ll be a remake eventually (praying for a BBC TV Show) and then it will be our chance to shine…

      • goldensnidget92

This. I’ve been expecting a BBC remake of Philosopher’s Stone to show over one Christmas in the distant future…

  • Jason

We are too, Martin, we are too.

  • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

Me too Mr. Freeman, me too.

  • Gmariam

I could totally see him as Remus Lupin…but the Peter Pettigrew comment makes sense too. I always thought the movies went too far with that character as well.

  • Hermione Granger

Something about how he looks has always reminded me of Mark Williams. He would’ve been a perfect Charlie Weasley, if they’d bothered to include him haha :)

  • Cari

I would have liked to have seen him as Dobby, Freeman’s one of the few people who could have shown not only Dobby’s comical side, but also his heart and courage and dignity. He would have elevated Dobby into a truly memorable movie character. Just think of what Andy Serkis did for Gollum and what that did for LOTR as a whole.

    • Jen

I thought Toby Jones’ vocal work was pretty great though!

  • maricelag21

Wormtail, hands down. He would’ve been AMAZING and (hopefully) would’ve brought a more nuanced performance (not like Kloves gave Pettigrew much dimension but whatever).

  • http://www.facebook.com/Joshstoiber Josh Stoiber

I think he would have made a really down-to-earth lupin (not that david thewlis wasn’t fantastic),

  • http://twitter.com/Siriusnerd007 Kristen Keys

I see him as Barty Crouch Sr

  • morgen71

I don’t care if he’d be playing the most minor character in the series- I’d want him in it! anything for him being in HP! Though to be honest, I think he’d be a good younger Dumbledore- you know, without the beard… or is that just me?

  • Ra

Computer generated Dobby like Andy Serkis in LOTR

  • http://www.facebook.com/cmoorepats Cameron Moore

Peeves, I can see him as peeves real easily and I’m not sure why.

  • VideoKilledSeverusSnape

I see him as Charlie or Arthur Weasley.

  • smileyface

    Arthur Weasley! :]

  • http://xyue-mayx.deviantart.com/ Dreamer

Now that I think about it… Yeah! I’m annoyed he wasn’t in HP too! Get in on the remake if you can!

  • randyb17

I think he could have also been a good Lupin

  • The507thDoctor

    Either Charlie or Lupin!!!

i would have loved him in harry potter
