Harald Zwart Harald Zwart director of The Mortal instruments: City of Bones discussed the trailer, fans and what it was like working on the film with MTV.

Zwart discussess getting the trailer together quickly, considering they just wrapped filming last week. Zwart says the teaser trailer is usually started a few weeks after production begins. There is typically enough footage to put something small together however this, while classified as a teaser, comes in at almost two minutes long.

When discussing fans Zwart said, “Sometimes I think you can’t rush these things, but we were really eager to get it out to the fans,” he said. “There’s a huge fan base. Every day when we were filming, there were fans outside of our set every day waiting. They’re so eager to see something that we figured it’s time to get something out to them.”

When discussing the making of the trailer Zwart says that the back track helped create the epic tone. While Zwart feels the movie is very epic it is also kind of an inmate drama. The music gives that slightly mysterious yet serious tone.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones doesn’t release until next August but you can watch the trailer here and check out the first still released of Clary.

I’ve never read the book and maybe that is the problem but the teaser made it look really corny and really camp in parts – is that how the book is or is it just bad directorial work?

honestly, I was jumping up and down about seeing these characters that I’ve loved for years finally portrayed by BRILLIANT actors. Most of my excitement stems from the fact fact that I’m a huge fan. So I can easily understand how some of it might look awkward to someone who hasn’t read the books. As for directional work, they just wrapped filming a week ago, I believe, so everything in this trailer is non-CGI, hence some camp, maybe?

First off, I thought this was a great trailer. I feel like all the cast really demonstrated that they can play these roles well.
However, I did kind of get the sense that you’re talking of in the part where Jace is telling Clary she’s not a mundane, but I think (and I certainly hope) that it’s just that we’re seeing a really small portion of the scene and just taking little snippets of dialogue out of context is what makes it sounds cheesy and when we see the whole scene, it’ll be fine.

Harald Zwart: “Well, we started the trailer after a couple of weeks, as soon as we can put something together. Normally we do that just to get people excited about the movie.”
