Geronimo! As we gear up for Friday’s prequel and trailer of this year’s Doctor Who Christmas special, the BBC have released the first official still of the Doctor – new costume and all!

As part of the BBC’S annual charity telethon Children In Need, a special two minute prequel to the yuletide episode will air on BBC One throughout Britain this Friday evening. Later that night, fans will be treated to the first full trailer – and presumably the long-awaited title.

After Amy and Rory bowed out in the series 7 part 1 finale “The Angels Take Manhattan”, the Doctor will meet new companion Clara (played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, who appeared as the seemingly linked Oswin Oswald in “Asylum of the Daleks”) in a Victorian themed episode starring Richard E. Grant as the adventure’s mysterious villain.

To whet our appetites for Friday’s footage feast, the BBC have released the first official image from the prequel. In the picture, we see the Doctor has got himself a new outfit after the loss of the Pond’s. While the bow-tie is still present, it’s otherwise all change as Eleven dons dark colours and furry collars in a costume oddly reminiscent of the time period he’ll be visiting…

Doctor Who Christmas Special 2012 Children in Need

There’s a brilliant new prequel to the Christmas Special starring Matt Smith as the Time Lord and featuring a number of familiar faces… If you need any more incentive to tune in we’ll just add that it was written by Steven Moffat!

Aside from that, there’s a new, exclusive preview trailer of the Christmas Special that includes the first glimpse of the Doctor with his new companion… Both items will be on BBC One on Friday, 16 November and will be available to view online soon after their Children in Need premiere.

The Christmas special will air (unsurprisingly) on Christmas day in both Britian and the United States, with BBC America following its recent trend of broadcasting new episodes on the same day as their British premiere.

What do you think of the new outfit? Is it too dark? Too different?

When does Matt Smith’s contract expire, again?

    • https://twitter.com/#!/HarriSargeant Harri Sargeant

I think it expires at the end of next year, though Steven Moffat and Matt have both said there won’t be a regeneration int he anniversary year – so at least until 2014.

      • LitMer8

Or so they say..I have this theory that Steven Moffat is like The Doctor..he always lies.
(And I’m saying this as someone who really REALLY wants Matt Smith to stay another year or two)

    • jghike

Never. He will be the Doctor forever.

  • ravenclaw1991

I think its a nice outfit for him, but I like the tweed jacket and bowtie and braces better.

  • Alice

The Doctor looks so surly in the picture. Or some . . . gentler synonym. Think it might be because he’s still not over the Ponds departure?

    • lorena

he looks kind of worn out, and old. Surly is a bit harsh, but yes, some synonym of that word.

      • LilyLuna

Sullen, maybe? He’s probably still grieving over the Ponds. :(

Yes please. Burn the bowtie and keep this.

    • belac889

But… but… Bow Ties are COOL!

  • Amy

“Featuring a NUMBER of familiar faces”……interesting

It looks like the Tardis needs a fresh coat of paint!

  • Becca300

It looks like 8′s outfit in the movie.

  • Elphaba Thropp

Wait…this is just an outfit, right? This isn’t THE outfit for the rest of the series?

  • Paula

Too dark. A bit too fancy. The colours defenetly don’t suit him:( I mean, yeah, so he’s old. But matt smith isn’t.

  • Paula

Actually. nup I love the bow tie, suspenders and jacket. BOW TIE MUST KEEP!

  • Jase

ooohhh fuc* no that outfit is shit a million times no!!!!!

It looks like he’s still grieving :( and for those of you freaking out about the costume I’m pretty sure this’ll only be for the Victorian Era scenes, and it looks great!

Personally, I’m not a fan of the fluffy lapels. Maybe it’s his pose; it seems like his neck disappeared.
