We heard a few months ago that an Assassin’s Creed movie was in the works, with none other than Michael Fassbender due to star and co-produce. In a recent interview, Ubisoft appears to confirm that the film is due out next year.

During an interview with Games Industry International, Ubisoft’s chief sales and marketing officer Geoffroy Sardin spoke about diversifying the franchise through books, figurines, and the Assassin’s Creed movie. Sardin stated that the film would release “in the next coming year”.

This news follows the recent announcement that Ubisoft were fast-tracking the film, and that it would be made in partnership with New Regency, who have produced and distributed hundreds of films from Marley & Me to Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Ubisoft retains a significant amount of creative control over the production of the Assassin’s Creed movie.

Michael Fassbender  (ShamePrometheus) was Ubisoft’s first choice for the lead role in the film, but it is not known whether he will play Altaïr, the protagonist in the first Assassin’s Creed game, or Ezio, the star of Assassin’s Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations. Fassbender might even play Desmond or new Assassin’s Creed III character Connor.

At this stage, with no other cast members confirmed and a script not yet finalized, it seems Ubisoft will have their work cut out if they are to meet a 2013 release date for the film adaptation.

Assassin’s Creed III launched on consoles at the end of last month, selling approximately 3.5 million units during the first week of its release. The game releases on PC on November 20 in North America and November 23 in Europe. Wii U versions will launch when the console is released on November 18 in North America and November 30 in Europe.

Are you interested in an Assassin’s Creed film? Do you think it’ll be ready for a 2013 release?

I don’t care who Fassbender plays, I’ll be there.

I am definitely on board for this movie but I would want Fassy to play Desmond given the choice. One just because he’s the most ethnically ambiguous character out of the 4 and I would want to limit the amount of white washing as much as possible honestly. If he played Connor that would be downright offensive, though it would of course be white washing with any character he played. Besides that, I don’t know how they’re going to put it out next year, it seems impossible unless they started filming immediately.

Concerned about the quick turn around. They pretty much need to start shooting TODAY if they even hope to make a holiday release for 2013. I predict this will be pushed to Spring or Summer 2014.
