3. You Know My Name (Casino Royale)
The Casino Royale opening song goes against the grain by not matching the title of the corresponding film. “You Know My Name” is also a departure from the husky female voices that perform many of the iconic bond songs, but the playing card motif that structures the entire opening is what sets “You Know My Name” apart. From the fighting sequences where the bodies dissolve into playing cards to the sequence where you watch the spades erupt from the barrels of handguns, this opener is appropriately poetic for a movie entitled Casino Royale.
2. Tomorrow Never Dies
While Sheryl Crow’s vocals may leave something to be desired, Tomorrow Never Dies has one of the more remarkable Bond opening sequences. The x-ray view of the gun being loaded is incredibly fascinating, as well as the transparent computer part lady that is present for much of the action here. The rough quality of Sheryl Crow’s voice is definitely a nice fit for the atmosphere of the piece, even if there are a few instances where you aren’t quite sure what note she may hit next…
1. Skyfall
Skyfall’s opening titles are off to an unfair head start when you consider the powerhouse behind the song. Adele and Paul Epworth wrote a perfect song for the newest Bond incarnation. “Skyfall” is the perfect mix of melodic and dark, providing a solid backdrop for the themes of the film to play upon. The visuals range from creepy to stunning in rapid succession, solidifying this opening sequence as one of the best in 20 years.
