Brace yourselves, musical fans. A new Les Misérables trailer for the highly-anticipated film leaked online today and offers musical performances from some of the main cast!

For the first time we’re getting to hear some of the actors singing live. The trailer includes appearances from Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (Javert), Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Amanda Seyfried (Cosette), Helena Bonham-Carter (Madame Thénardier), and Sacha Baron-Cohen (Thénardier).

The trailer invokes a lot of emotion and has us very excited for the December 25 premiere. Watch below:

The first Les Misérables trailer was released back in May and offered a similar amount of excitement. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, who led a cast to uniquely sing every song in every scene 100% live. The result should be pretty amazing on the big screen. You can learn more about this shooting process by watching a behind the scenes featurette released in September. Eddie Redmayne, who plays Marius, says in the piece: “Normally if you were making an old school movie musical as a group of actors we’d go into a studio, record an album, and then two months later we’d arrive on set and we’d play the playback and we would mime along side. The problem with that is that you need to make your acting choices three months before you’ve even met the actor you’re working with.”

What do you think of the new ‘Les Miserables’ trailer?

  • Tina

    Oh yeah!

  • antonia31

YES!! Also so happy to hear other songs. I understand what people were saying about I Dreamed A Dream being popular in pop culture right now, but a few of the other songs are well known too! It’s nice to hear them!

  • Guest

Also, I wouldn’t say this offers musical performances from the entire main cast. Enjolras, the Thernardiers, and most notably Eponine have not been heard yet.

    • http://www.hypable.com/ Andrew Sims

      You’re right – I will adjust.

      • antonia31

No I was actually wrong. Eponine is heard. But the other three aren’t. Hence why I deleted the previous comment, although apparently it’s still here.

    • Carilyn

Well, I can see why the Thernardiers weren’t heard – all of their songs really aren’t central to the main plot, and that’s what they’re trying to convey in the trailer. Also, I wish we’d gotten at least a line from Gavroche, because I didn’t realize that was him until near the end.

    So many feelings!!!

cant stop hitting the replay button! THIS IS BEAUTIFUL!

  • Amanda

I think I just died. Is it December yet?

  • 24601

Hmmm, a bit undecided about how I feel. As a huge Les Miserables fan, I was surprised to see how many lines are spoken rather than sung. And Russell Crowe’s “singing” is a bit disappointing, No lie though, I can’t wait for the movie to come out!!! Anne Hathaway is amazing. I got the shivers several times. Woohoo Les Miserables!

    • Carilyn

They do that for every movie musical though. Look at Rent and Phantom – both similar in their sung-through style to Les Miz, but both had lines of spoken dialogue. Movies are a bit more grounded in reality than musicals since they have a more concrete setting, so spoken dialogue is sometimes necessary. But honestly, it will probably be far and few between. So freaking excited!

Yeah, I personally thought everyone sounded good, except Crowe’s voice really stood out, and not in a good way.

  • Kellie

I cannot wait. I have loved the musical for years, but this version evokes such emotion, I will be viewing it with a box of tissues. Just the small amount of Anne Hathaway’s singing is so viceral – you feel the pain. Please hurry December!

  • Sisi

I honestly thought I would never be as excited to see any other movie as i was to see HP… of course this was before i knew there would be a GOOD Les Mis movie….

  • Allison L.

I loved seeing everyone preforming! i need it now!

  • luigi

My god, Anne is going to nail it.

  • http://twitter.com/LiamFloyd Liam Floyd

    Oh. My. God.

  • Hannah

Oh. My. GOD. Christmas cannot come fast enough. This is going to be AMAZING!

  • http://www.facebook.com/cguinansaca Claudia Guinansaca

I’M SO EXCITED. christmas needs to hurry up.

  • nova

I can’t believe how much they are underplaying Eponine. She’s always seemed to be everyone’s favorite in the play.

    • Zack

No, she is a HUGE part of the film. They really fleshed out her character so much.
Many (including myself) read the leaked script, so don’t worry, Eponine is a major character in the movie.

    • http://www.eigakanthemovietheater.blogspot.com Jenny Leigh

I’m going out on a hunch, but maybe the reason she is not shown as much is because she is the least well know of all the actors. Didn’t she actually come from the London musical?

      • Carilyn

Yes, that’s probably a big part of it. Plus, her two signature songs are “On My Own” – one of the most well known songs of the show, but one that doesn’t really fit into the main plot and thus wouldn’t make sense to show in the trailer, and “A Little Fall of Rain” which, well… I don’t want to spoil it for any one reading the comments who never saw the show, but for those who do know, it’s *obvious* why they wouldn’t include that one in the trailer.

  • Roryduck

I my have squealed in class watching this. SO EXCITED!!!!

  • Anonymous

Hmm. Not thrilled with Russell Crowe’s singing, at least from what I heard there. I also wish that they had had Anne Hathaway dye her hair blonde (comes from a very memorable line in the book). I’m also worried about what they’ll cut out. Hopefully they’ll just do a three-hour movie!

Between this and The Hobbit, I know December will be a great month for movies. They all sound really good!

  • Mandy

Anne Hathaway is going to be amazing. I can’t stand Amanda Seyfried’s voice in this trailer though.

  • http://xyue-mayx.deviantart.com/ Dreamer

I loved the ending of the trailer with Can You Hear the People Sing! December please some soon!

  • Gary65

I am not a fan of musicals but I just have to see this. Anne Hathaway gives me chills in every scene she’s in.

  • DoctorMerlinPotter

Oh my lord I’m so EXCITED! My school did Les Mis, and it was AMAZING! So now I get to see it for real!

  • poopieparrot

is anyone else really disappoined in how javert sounds when he’s singing one day more? there’s no conviction or drive behind it he’s just singing it like to prove that he knows the words….

    • Mandy

Agreed. He and Cosette are my worries.

  • Anna S.

Oh, Aaron Tveit. What an attractive man you are.

  • Christy

Love the trailer but there is one let down…Amanda’s voice. I know she is classically trained but her notes seemed weak and didn’t cut it for me. I’m hoping it is the editing because I know she has the skill to nail the role. Personally loved Anne’s singing and Samantha Bark’s “there” was perfect. Either way I cannot wait for Dec. =D

  • Jyllian Lu

It’s an extremely wise decision to sing ‘live’…gonna love this movie…

  • http://about.me/dshana Shana Debusschere

Much moree chronoligical than the first one, but I like it. I need it to be christmas!

  • potterjay

This is amazing! Anne Hathaway is amazing! And they’ve finally shown Samantha Barks!! :D

  • Chiokiwi

Now that is what I’ve been waiting for in a preview. That was awesome!

  • VideoKilledSeverusSnape

I’m probably the only one, but I really don’t like Amanda Seyfried in this film. :/

  • http://twitter.com/SarahTriv Sarah S-Griffiths

This trailer made me cry. reminded me of when I saw it in school. Easily one of the best plays EVER! seriously cannot wait for this! gonna book my ticket as soon as I can :)

  • antonia31

Just watched the trailer in 1080- so beautiful!

  • antonia31

Also, I still think that the little girl who plays Cosette can at times look like a white walker from Game of Thrones… bit creepy.
    Although in general she’s cute!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joey-Mangum/1820064015 Joey Mangum

Cold chills. This is going to be absolutely fantastic!

  • Anna Zahn

Not long enough – can’t wait till Christmas

  • Jack Andrews

I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. What works on stage frequently crashlands at theatres.

  • Richard

I’m a big Le Mis fan, seen it so many times live I can’t even say. Looking forward to just hearing all those great notes and voices. It’s going to be good!
