The Disney Channel’s upcoming Boy Meets World sequel is looking for its lead.

As production on Girl Meets World gets going, we are learning small details about the characters, namely Cory Matthews’ chosen profession and his daughter’s name.

Cory and Topanga’s teen daughter will be named Riley, Entertainment Weekly reports. Apparently, the high school sweethearts decided against Beverly Glen – the name future Cory and Topanga choose for their baby daughter in season 7′s “Seven the Hard Way.” Then again, that is the episode where Cory, Topanga, Shawn, Angela, Jack and Rachel stop speaking to each other after playful pranks get out of hand. The episode looks ahead seven years to when the gang reunites at Mr. Feeny’s retirement party and no one but Cory and Topanga have kept in touch, and even they are having to attend marriage counseling. The fact that the newest addition to the Matthews clan isn’t named Beverly Glen may bode well for the perseverance of Cory’s friendships, hopefully leaving the door open for guest roles for Uncle Eric, Uncle Shawn and Mr. Feeny. Who doesn’t want a good Feeny call after all? Mr. Mattheeeeewwsss just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

The casting call for Riley, according to EW, follows:

[RILEY MATTHEWS] Please submit all ethnicities. 13 years old, indelible personality, an adorable girl on the cusp of whatever comes next in life, and wanting to rush into it head first. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, and spends most of her time juggling the obstacles that life throws her way, some of those being her father who is also her seventh grade history teacher, her mother who is Topanga, and her brother, Elliot, who is one grade older in school and in life experience and makes sure to always let her know it. But there is no obstacle in this girl’s world that can dampen her bright spirit and eternal optimism. Series Lead.

From the description above, it sounds like Riley will take from her father. We were hoping for a young Topanga (think hippie, interpretive dance era) but maybe she’ll have her mother’s intelligence. She’ll also have an older brother who sounds a bit like a young Eric Matthews. Are Cory and Topanga even old enough to have 13 and 14-year-old kids? They didn’t have kids when Boy Meets World ended in 2000.

We also learn that Cory followed in Mr. Feeny’s footsteps and chose a career as a history teacher. Hard to believe considering he spent most of middle school and high school sleeping in class, but people change, right?

Another casting call is out for Riley’s best friend Maya – a Shawn-like, “dark and edgy” character who never met her father (Chet much?).

[MAYA] Please submit all ethnicities. 13 years old. Maya is Riley’s best friend and does not share Riley’s optimism. She is far darker and less trusting of the world. She is an only child and has never known her father, which immediately makes her relationship with both Riley and Cory Matthews very important to her although she’d never admit it. She is not a good student in school, but is a wonderful student of life and absolutely magnetic in attracting or intimidating the people in her sphere as she cares to. Dark and edgy, but just as fiercely loyal to Riley as Riley is to her. Which makes us want to believe that maybe there’s a good heart under the acerbic wit. Or maybe not. Series Regular.

TVLine first reported the news of a Boy Meets World spin-off, helmed by BMW creator and executive producer Michael Jacobs, last week. Early reports suggest the Disney Channel is in talks with Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel to reprise their roles as Cory and Topanga. Following the news, Fishel took to Twitter to tease fans a bit.

While Fishel and Savage are keeping mum on the subject, Lily Nicksay, the original Morgan from 1993-1995, told TMZ she’d “love to talk [to Disney] about being a part of it.”

What do you think of these character descriptions? Who would you cast in the roles?

I don’t know a lot of young teenage actors so I can’t put in any input. So far it looks like Riley is going to be a normal girl and experiencing normal, real life experiences. I’m okay with that. Kind of surprised myself that Cory ended up as a history teacher. I hope we do get a Feeny appearance; a guest star on a few episodes rather than a series regular.

if Mr. Feeny comes back I’ll die happy :D

  • GeekGirl101

It’s actually possible because by the time the series is cast and made it will be 2014 most likely. In which case them having a 12-13 year old daughter and a 13-14 year old son is very possible.

Thats a very good point. Filming and casting a TV show is a long process, so they are probably accounting for that in their casting call. Plus, if they are calling for “all ethnicities” it is also possible that they are planning on Cory and Topanga’s child to have been adopted, which means that it doesn’t matter how old the kid is. Somehow, Cory and Topanga having adopted their children seems more appropriate to me for some reason.Adoption would also make more sense, because even if they could have a 14 year old by time the show premiers, that means that Cory and Topanga would have had to have their kid while they were still in college.
I can look past the age thing as long as the show is good and Shawn and Feeny make an appearance!
Also, does it kind of bothers me that Cory is teaching his own kid. I know children who went to school where their parents taught, and it was strictly against the rules for parents to teach their own children, because of the threats of favoritism and all that.

My dad was my teacher and my tutor for 2 years. Here in Spain it’s completely legal and I have to say my marks were always lower than they should be…

      • Enelya

In 6th grade my teacher’s kid was in our class. No one cared

I can totally see Cory being a teacher!

    • Sapph

He reminds me of Mr. Shue from Glee.

  • Jill

I’m excited and nervous. I would love to see some of the old crew but for now I’m just going to wait it out and see what happens before saying anything bad about it.

  • MirrorWolf

Maybe Mr. Feeny comes back as the school principal. :)

  • Samma

“Submit all ethnicities”? Do they have to say that for some reason? Because how could Cory and Topanga’s natural born daughter be anything but the whitest girl you know?

    • MelanieM

Adoption? That would explain their ages.

      • Betsy

Plus, this way we know that they aren’t going for the “look,” but for an actress who can really play the role. Bodes well for the quality of the show. :)

  • Victoria

This makes me both very excited and incredibly scared at the same time. Boy Meets World was such an awesome show, and I’m terrified this new spin-off won’t live up to its glory.

More Feeny would definitely help this, though.

I think they would have to replace Mr. Feeny as the man who played him, William Daniels, died some time ago. :(

    • Sarah

He didn’t die…he’s starring on Grey’s Anatomy right now.

      • http://www.facebook.com/LaDracul Joanna Boese

Okay, I guess I was wrong about that…

Wish it was trying to be a weeeee bit different than the original. At this point it sounds more like a reboot with cute story-bible tie-ins from the past.

Totally get why they’re making Cory a teacher, but for some reason I can’t decide if it suits him or not… on the one hand, immense influence from Feeny and possibly an urge to divulge all he’s learned, y’know, as a parallel to the theme of Boy Meets World. On the other, I don’t ever remember him showing any bit of interest in that field, even in the college years. And does this mean, if the show is a success, he’ll wind up following her all through her schooling like Feeny did? Dunno how well that will play a second time.

Would be interesting if Riley turns out to be adopted. Maya sounds emo and boring. Like I said at the top, it all sounds a bit too samey. It’ll never match BMW if for no other reason than nostalgia, but hopefully it’ll have a nice run for a new generation to enjoy.

  • Glaciusx

This is amazing….I just hope they don’t make it like their other shows and stick to the BMW formula. I can’t even watch Disney Channel anymore because of how different it is now but I’ll definitely watch for this.

  • Becca

Yeah there is technically no way they could have a daughter who is 13…weird.

Guess we are peering into the FUTUREEEEE!!!!!

    • kelsey0403

Or it could just not release for a couple of years… Say early 2014?

      • Becca

Well how old were they when they graduated college? 22? Topanga would have had to be pregnant in the last episode. My parents dated all through high school and college and still waited 4 years outside of school to have kids. And considering where we left Topanga and Cory off in there lives I would say they were not planning on having kids.

Regardless I don’t really care if they mess with the time line a bit, it is just TV after all. It’s just fun to think about.

  • Megan

I still can’t believe this is actually happening! I don’t care if I’m in college, I’m totally watching this. This is kinda the feeling I got when Toy Story 3 came out!

  • ryan

    when is it starting?

  • nina

very excited for it to come on tv

  • Enelya

“a Shawn-like, “dark and edgy” character who never met her father (Chet much?)” Uh, Shawn knew Chet very well actually. He took off several times, but he’d grown up with him. It was Jack that didn’t know Chet at all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/RBuck823 Rob Buck

Maya has never known her father…best friend’s with cory’s daughter….Could Maya be Shawn’s?

    • Carlton

that could be a good plot twist down the road
