The BBC has released descriptions of two upcoming Merlin episodes, 5×07 “A Lesson in Vengeance” and 5×08 “The Hollow Queen.” Beware of spoilers.
The next episode of Merlin, of course, is the Gwen/Morgana-centric “The Dark Tower,” in which Morgana kidnaps Gwen and sets up a deadly series of traps for Arthur, Merlin and the knights as they attempt to rescue her.
But, as the synopsis for the following episode “A Lesson in Vengeance” hints at, their rescue mission might not be as successful as they will initially believe:
Darkness steals into the very heart of Camelot, as Morgana and her puppet Queen hatch a sinister plan to murder the King. But when stable hand Tyr Seward becomes caught in the crossfire, he threatens to ruin everything… As the plot thickens and reaches its deadly climax, can a suspicious Merlin unravel the truth before it’s too late?
That Morgana has a “puppet Queen” makes us worry that Guinevere returns to Camelot only to reveal herself to be enchanted! This is not the first time Morgana has used this strategy, either; in last season’s “A Servant of Two Masters,” it was Merlin who was enchanted to kill Arthur (and Gwen and Gaius who figured it out and released him from the spell).
The episode after that, though, seems to have moved the story along (hopefully with Gwen restored back to her usual self). The press release from BBC reads:
When Merlin agrees to help a young Druid boy, he has no choice but to leave Camelot on a dangerous mission.
Article Continues BelowAnd with the citadel distracted by the visit of the fearsome Sarrum of Amata, it seems that no one will notice his absence.
But as the sky darkens, so do Merlin’s suspicions – is there more to Daegal than meets the eye? And can a man as ruthless as the Sarrum ever really be trusted? Too late, the young warlock realizes he’s made a terrible mistake.
We have previously seen the first promotional image from 5×08, showing John Shrapnel as Sarrum. It will be interesting to see Merlin leave Camelot on his own, and to see him meet more of the Druids.
Guest stars for this episode, which will air on 24 November at 20:00 GMT, include Matthew Clancy as Albin and Mitch Benn as Gerrin.
Update: Episode 5×08 is entitled “The Hollow Queen.” Sounds like Gwen still isn’t back to her normal self!
