Disastrous conditions along the east coast didn’t affect the weekend box office, as most theaters affected by the storm re-opened their doors and Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph broke a record for the studio.

Wreck-It Ralph made $49.1 million at the weekend box office, which made it the highest grossing opening weekend for a Disney animated film. The previous record holder was their 2010 film Tangled which generated $48.8 million. Ralph stars John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Sarah Silverman, and Jane Lynch. You can read our review here.

Elsewhere at the box office, Flight starring Denzel Washington made $25 million and Ben Affleck’s Argo made $10.2 million. Universal’s The Man with the Iron Fists opened to $8.2 million, and Taken 2 added $6 million to its previous $119 million take. Tom Hanks’ Cloud Atlas made another $5.2 million, bringing its total gross to a very small $18.2 million.

It’s believed that Hurricane/Superstorm Sandy did not affect box office numbers this weekend as those affected were looking for a distraction.

Next weekend, 23rd James Bond film Skyfall is expected to dominate the box office. It’s already made a grand total of $287 million overseas amongst strong reviews. Some call it the best Bond film of the series, and certainly the best Daniel Craig era film.
