Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 has been sitting pretty since last year with the record for highest-grossing opening week in the United Kingdom.
Until now.
Skyfall, the 23rd James Bond movie, opened in U.K. theaters last Friday, and the film’s opening week total is out. The film made £37.2 million in its first seven days, surpassing Deathly Hallows – Part 2‘s £35.7 million in July 2011.
It’s worth noting that Skyfall was not released in 3D, but the final Potter film was. For that reason, this new record looks even more impressive.
James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli issued a statement following the announcement of this new record. “We are very grateful to the Bond fans and all UK cinema audiences for making Skyfall the biggest opening week ever during our 50th anniversary year,” they said.
Skyfall opens in United States theaters next Friday, November 9. Many reviews describe it as one of the best Bond films ever.
Last week we learned the Skyfall screenwriter will also pen the next two Bonds (starring Daniel Craig). The news came as high praise oozed out of the media who attended advance screenings.
Looking past the Daniel Craig Bond era, we recently heard that Idris Elba may be the next James Bond. This wouldn’t happen for at least a few more years. It depends in part on how long Craig wants to continue.
