The upcoming Disney film Oz The Great and Powerful, which tells the story of how The Wizard of Oz came to Oz, has released a new image today!

Next March, Disney will tell the tale of how Oscar Wiggs (James Franco) made his way into the Land of Oz. Upon ending up there after his hot air balloon meets a tornado, he meets three witches: Glinda (Michelle Williams), Theodora (Mila Kunis), and Evanora (Rachel Weisz). As Yahoo! states, we know Glinda becomes the Good Witch of the North, but it’s unclear whether Theodora or Evanora will become the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West. The book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz doesn’t give any reference to the names of witches, and Elphaba from Wicked was named as a tribute to the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’s author, L. Frank Baum.

Check out the awesome new picture of The Wicked Witch of the West below! This is the first section of a three-part image.

We’ll be sure to post the other two sections as they’re released! You can also watch the exciting teaser trailer here!

What do you think of the new image? Who do you think will play the green-skinned Wicked Witch of the West, and who do you think will play Witch who is later killed by Dorothy’s house? Leave us your thoughts below!

Rachel weisz is the wicked witch of the east

  • Enelya

I never got why there isn’t a witch of the South…………

Me either! I’ve always wanted to know that!

      • Amber

In the books there is a Good Witch of the South. It is actually Glinda. And the Good Witch of the North does not have a name. At least not in the original 14 books.

Yes, that face is definitely Mila Kunis. Without a doubt. It would make more sense though. From the trailer, it appears that Weisz is wicked from the start, but Kunis’ character appears more subdued. So it would make sense if her character underwent a dramatic transformation.

I thought that too, but looking again it also seems as Rachel Weisz’s face! I’m so confused but wanting it to be Mila Kunis!

I feel like that costume is too… modern? I dunno, would have preferred something more old school and classic, at least with regards to this poster.

Mostly I’ve been finding it incredibly jarring to see a Wizard of Oz themed movie with modern actors. It doesn’t feel right. Or it’s weird, or something. I realize nothing is sacred in today’s movie industry, but… is nothing sacred? :/

    • Seamus MacGillicuddy

It is rather modern. The costume for the 1939 classic was a black silk designer gown that can technically be considered Haute Couture. That was no simple dress, but a fabulous creation designed for Margaret Hamilton personally. It would make sense for the design for Kunis’ wicked witch to be a little different and personalized for the actress.

I agree, I just think it’s a little much. Like I just said in the post above, there’s something seriously wrong with the notion of trying to make the Wicked Witch of the West alluring. It doesn’t fit the established character at all.

im sorry if you want the original movie, then go watch the original movie!

I’m all for reinterpretations, but they’re billing this as a direct prequel to the 1939 Wizard of Oz. Like – if you’re planting THAT flag you better be bringing your A quadruple plus game.

So when I see they’re trying to show off a a ‘sexy’ Wicked Witch of the West, I’m a little turned off right at the start. Seriously, THEY’VE TRIED TO MAKE THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST ALLURING! THE F?!?!?

Ideally, I’d like movie studios to leave cinema classics like this alone, but if they’re going to tread those waters regardless at least get the established aesthetic right.

    I’m pretty excited for this.

It doesn’t look like a real picture, more like a cartoon drawing.
