Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for portraying the titular character in BBC’s Sherlock, has been slated to play The Beatles manager Brian Epstein in the upcoming biopic.
The film will be directed by Paul McGuigan, who directed four of the six released episodes of Sherlock. Todd Graff wrote the screenplay, whose focus is “not a story about The Beatles from Epstein’s point of view but the story of Epstein himself.” Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman are producing along with Simon Halfon.
Epstein signed with The Beatles before the band became famous and died in 1967 from an accidental drug overdose.
Benedict Cumberbatch may be seen later this year in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey along with Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman, as well as in next year’s hotly-anticipated Star Trek sequel. It is unknown right now which of the three Hobbit films Cumberbatch will appear in as the dragon Smaug.
