A couple of networks have canceled new episodes of their shows that were scheduled to air due to inevitable pre-emptive local news covering Hurricane Sandy.

Hurricane Sandy is affecting millions in the northeastern United States, thus local news stations in the affected areas are staying on air for extended periods to cover the weather live.

The following shows were canceled Monday night:

- CBS: How I Met Your Mother, Partners, 2 Broke Girls, Mike & Molly, Hawaii Five-0
- CW: Gossip Girl, 90210
- Comedy Central: The Daily Show, The Colbert Report

The following shows were canceled Tuesday night:
- ABC: Private Practice

Though shows were canceled, TV watchers still needed content to keep them entertained. Netflix reported a bump in instant streaming usage on Sunday and Monday thanks to everyone staying indoors. On New York public radio, Elmo comforted kids by speaking about hurricane safety and answering questions from his younger viewers.

This post will stay updated with additional cancelations as they’re announced.

New York-based late night talk shows David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon recorded Monday night’s new episodes without an audience – see their respective, eerie opening monologues here and here. Other networks canceled programming last night, but there have been no further announcements about postponements this evening. We’ll keep you updated!

The Daily Show and Colbert Report are cancelled as well. My thoughts are with those people in Sandy’s path.

I’m actually REALLY interested in seeing what the late night talk shows will be like without audiences. Thanks for the heads up!

This will be the perfect time to get ratings up since everyone will be home watching tv and they CANCEL the shows! Not smart!

    • Samantha

Actually, all the networks will have weather reports on constantly, so nobody could watch the regular shows if they want to.

    • Jen_Lamoureux

Seriously the only thing on TV for people still with power is the weather report which is incredibly annoying because really I know there are high winds all I have to do is look out the window. And last night I missed the last few minutes of Revenge because they broke in with a “Sandy is on her way” announcement because that was critical. So I would rather have things postponed than miss pieces of a show

I missed the beginning of Once Upon a time last night because they were cutting in every half an hour. I ended up just waiting and watching it online after because it wasn’t worth it.

How dare they cut into the end of Revenge!!

Go On and The New Normal are cancelled for Tuesday night, not Monday night.

This sucks, but I understand. *sigh* I was really looking forward to Gossip Girl tonight. Especially since we just got WPIX11 back after having been without it for weeks thanks to Cablevision.

  • theaterboy1

Its kind of ironic that while most shows are cancelled the people with power can still watch a show about losing power called Revolution (assuming NBC doesn’t cancel it and The Voice).

  • matthewhpg

Not to be insensitive or anything, but when will these episodes air?

    • 17jeda

Isn’t it too soon to even be insensitive? Or have people already been affected by the hurricane?

      • matthewhpg

Yeah, but this post will probably still be up when the time comes that it could be considered insensitive, so…

      • 17jeda

not sure why the down-votes, was a legitimate question about the weather

Ok, while I get this I don’t remember them ever doing anything like this before. But since it’s New York that being hit they do it. If it was hitting Flordia or a very large area in the south would they be airing repeats? For some reason I doubt it.
In 2009 there was a HUGE Nor’easter that hit a large number of states and I don’t remember them airing repeats those nights.

I was just thinking the same thing… when Katrina and Ike hit it was business as usual.

I found it funny that my DVR still recorded HIMYM and Partners as new episodes and even had the descriptions as such, yet they were the recorded episodes.

  • mirna

The New Normal didn’t get cancelled. According to their site it just got pushed back to 10:30pm eastern im assuming – it says 10:30/9:30c and that makes no sense to me I’m australian…

New Normal didn’t get pushed back, that’s actually the new time it airs. Been airing at that time for the past 2 weeks.

Oh good, I didn’t miss last night’s HIMYM episode. Though, it wasn’t really necessary to postpone it. I would have watched it online or on demand after I got power back anyway.
