Matt Smith, our reigning Doctor Who Timelord, just got a surprise from his bosses at the BBC. Smith just turned 30, and they wanted to make sure the occasion was memorable.
The festivities were headed up by producer Caroline Skinner. Most of the crew were there as was the new companion, Jenna-Louise Coleman. With a little help from the art department, Matt Smith saw a sea of doctors singing to him.
In the video you can see Matt Smith wearing the new suit that has been seen frequently filming recently. It looks like he’s turned in the light tan tweed for a darker shade of brown. Regardless, the bow tie is still there, though it too is new. Smith has also been spotted in period dress, but this seems to be his new, modern-day look.
The Christmas special was finished some time ago, and they should shortly be winding down filming for the series that will pick up at a date to be announced in spring 2013. They have not been filming sequentially, and have been at it for several months. According to Collider, who just finished a phone interview with the cast, “Matt Smith told me they just finished filming the first episode of next season.”
The show is taking off into American pop culture like never before. For the first time ever, it’s been nominated in the People’s Choice Awards, is up for a TV Guide Fan Favorites cover shot, and just last night, The Big Bang Theory referenced the show once again.
