The ER alum is set as to play Agent Althea Rice in Joss Whedon’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show.
It’s only been eleven days since our first S.H.I.E.L.D. casting update came in the form of Clark Gregg as Agent Phil Coulson, but now one of the key roles that we mentioned in a recent S.H.I.E.L.D. casting call has been taken by actress Ming-Na Wen according to Deadline.
As some of you may remember, the character of Agent Althea Rice will also go by the nickname of “The Calvary” on the upcoming TV show, which will tie into the larger Avengers cinematic universe. Ming-Na’s character is described as being a soulful agent that has been slightly damaged by her past experiences. She’s a fierce combatant, as well as an ace-pilot and a weapons expert.
Ming-Na is best known for her tenure on the hit show ER, although our audience may better remember her as the speaking voice of Mulan in Mulan. She has also appeared in Syfy’s Eureka and Stargate Universe, so she’s had more than her fair share of experience in an alternative universe.
Whedon will be writing the first episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. with his brother Jed Whedon, along with Jed’s fiancée Maurissa Tancharoen (Doctor Horrible’s Sing Along Blog). The show will center around the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. and might possibly take place before the events of The Avengers
So far, Wen and Gregg are the only two actors confirmed to star in the show, though more casting news is sure to come down the wire any day now.
