No. No, it isn’t.

But it could be! Taylor’s new album hit stores on October 22, and like her previous three albums, Red is full of relationship anthems—songs about making up, breaking up, and falling in and out of love.

Coming on the heels of “The Break Up” episode of Glee, my fan girl brain couldn’t help but see the connections between Swift’s lyrics and our favorite Glee couples.

“Red”

Glee Couple: Finchel

It is only fitting that the title song of the album reflects this Glee couple. From day one it has always been Rachel and Finn, but it hasn’t always been an easy road. They’ve had to deal with cheating, insecurities, growing up and growing apart. They’ve been passionately in love and furious at each other—sometimes at the same time. This emotional intensity is captured perfectly in “Red,” in which Taylor reflects on a roller coaster relationship that never lost that fire, even when it ended. Even though Finchel is over for now, I can’t help but feel that the spark is alive.

In Taylor’s Words: “Losing him was blue like I’d never known / Missing him was dark grey all alone / Forgetting him was like trying to know somebody you’ve never met / But loving him was red.”

“I Knew You Were Trouble”

Glee Couple: Jarley

We don’t know much about the Jake/Marley relationship yet, but I’m certain that it’s not going to end well for perfect Miss Marley. It never pays to go after the bad boy, and an entire song in the Britney 2.0 episode was devoted to warning Marley away. Yet she continues to go after Puck Jr., and she’ll have no one to blame but herself when he breaks her heart.

In Taylor’s Words: “Now the saddest fear comes creeping in / That you never loved me, or her, or anyone, or anything… / I knew you were trouble when you walked in / So shame on me now.”

“The Last Time”

Glee Couple: Klaine

The Klaine breakup probably hit the fandom the hardest; I was in tears three notes into “Teenage Dream.” That being said, it’s clear now (and for some people, it has been clear for a while) that Kurt and Blaine were never that good in a relationship. Of all the couples who broke up on the last episode, this is the one that feels the most permanent to me. This haunting break up song (which features Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol) speaks to the vulnerability and bittersweet emotion of ending a relationship with someone you still love, even if it is better for both of you. Like Chris Colfer’s and Darren Criss’ acting, “The Last Time” gives me chills with every line.

In Taylor’s Words: “This is the last time you tell me I got it wrong / This is the last time I say it’s been you all along / This is the last time I let you in my door / This is the last time / I won’t hurt you anymore.”

“Stay Stay Stay”

Glee Couple: Brittana

Due to Naya Rivera’s flawless rendition of “Mine,” I will forever associate Brittana with Taylor Swift. My favorite part of that song (which is in the iTunes version, but unfortunately didn’t make it into the episode) is the line, “I braced myself for the goodbye / ‘Cause that’s all I’ve ever known / But you took me by surprise / Said ‘I’ll never leave you alone.’” To me, that sums up Santana’s entire personality, and Brittany’s, too; we know that Santana is jaded, but Brittany has been and always will be there for her. This dynamic is echoed in “Stay Stay Stay.” In one scene, Taylor throws a cell phone at her partner, who later agrees to make up but, in true Brittany fashion, comes in wearing a football helmet. Even though Brittana is broken up for the moment, I don’t think they will stay that way for long.

In Taylor’s Words: “You took the time to memorize me my fears my hopes and dreams / I just like hanging out with you all the time / All those times that you didn’t leave it’s been occuring to me / I’d like to hang out with you for my whole life.”

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”

Glee Couple: ????

We had four “break-ups” on the last episode, but I honestly don’t know which are temporary and which couples are over for good. Who do you think is “never ever getting back together”?

I don’t feel like Klaine’s break up is permanent considering how popular the relationship is. I just think that it’s over considering how many times couples have cheated. I just feel like this was a (big) bump in the road. This was a first relationship with both of them so they shared a lot of firsts and I feel like they both got a little lost in it (considering any story line involving Blaine, aside from maybe two, was a Klaine one) and lost themselves in the process. I think this is an opportunity for us to get to know Blaine outside of Klaine because in reality we don’t know much about him and for Kurt to find himself again. I think this break up is merely a plot device to shake things up for a bit. Just taking in the fandom’s likingness of Kurt and Blaine together, I think they will find each other again after they, of course, find themselves first. It’s gonna be fine.

I thought the same thing! After I heard the singles from the album, my friend and I joked that there was a month break on the show so that the Taylor Swift album could come out and Ryan Murphy could do an episode based on it. But I thought that “Red” would be for Kurt and Blaine, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together would be Finn and Rachel, and State of Grace would be Brittany and Santana. Of course, I haven’t actually listened to the other songs on the CD that weren’t released as singles yet.

Originally I assigned a character/couple to every song on the album, but that would be way too much for an article (and Hypable has an 800 word limit) so I had to choose my favorites. State of Grace was my second Brittana choice.

I wish We Are Never Getting Back Together is about Finchel!!! And “Mine”will forever by my favorite TS song because Naya is amazing!

I really really hope that “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” represents Finchel. I’m honestly tired of their relationship. Finn needs to grow up and quit being the douche he’s always being. They are not in high school anymore! It’ll be perfect if he’s not in the show anymore his storyline is boring but I know it’s never gonna happened.

@b730dc0c74629fac6abe5332a6d6281f:disqus the things you say about Klaine are completely relevant about Finchel. From day one, they have been established as the show’s core couple, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Finchel will grow back together after they establish who they are as individuals first. Roots Before Branches.

Finchel is the only couple of the couples that broke up in The Break Up to have broken up many times before. And they always get back together and end up having the exact same fights and issues (mainly because Finn is a hypocritical, idiotic butthead – not sure what the rules are about things we can’t say), and after four months of not returning her calls, shows up in New York and he’s like, “I still love you,” And Rachel was like… “I just… I mean this is exhausting, you know, like, we are never getting back together. Like, ever”.

Break up all the couples!!! I’m so tired of the lot of them; it’s time for something new and different.

“Stay, Stay, Stay” reminds of Ron/Hermione and “Everything Has Changed” reminds me of Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione after the Battle of Hogwarts. I can see the relation between the songs on the album and Glee couples though.

Holy Ground for Quinn and Puck maybe?

  • Strumchick

WANEGBT so represents Quinchel. Season 2, just saying.

Actually 22 is about Taylor’s friendship with Dianna (also Selena, Ashley, and Claire). So technically it is about a glee couple! But not in this context of course.
