The Vampire Diaries showrunner Julie Plec reveals some details about the next episode, and talks about the tone of season 4.
Two episodes into the season, The Vampire Diaries is undeniably moving at a slow pace following Elena’s transition. Speaking to The Insider, Plec reveals that this is a very conscious move on the writers’ part.
“We really wanted to show the struggle of Elena’s journey. We didn’t want to be one and done. It’s not, ‘Boom! You’re a vampire! Weee! Isn’t this fun?’,” Plec says. So to portray her struggle, “we are slow playing a lot in the beginning of the season. We’re eeking out small nuggets of our mythology over the first few episodes as opposed to slamming into it.”
Speaking about the third episode, “The Rager,” Plec says that the role of Klaus in the fourth season will become clear. We’ll also learn how Rebekah will fit into the story, and Plec previews that, “There are, of course, a couple of surprises in store for her early this season that shake things up.”
In an interview with Give Me My Remote, Plec talks about the way in which the relationships will begin to shift, and some big mythology developments that we’ll begin to see in the fourth episode. “There will be some conflicts between characters we want to see getting along and some nice moments between characters we’re not used to getting along,” she says, “and there’s a couple sexy make out moments … the show doesn’t do enough of those!”
She also talks about the future of the show, and how long she sees it going for. “I like to think of it as a six year journey. I see year five really clearly. I see year six with semi-confident security. [Jokes] If I think of year seven, I break out in hives and have a nervous breakdown,” Plec says.
The Vampire Diaries returns with 4×03 “The Rager” next Thursday at 8/7c.
