J.K. Rowling appeared live on CBS’s This Morning for her first interview physically in the United States to promote The Casual Vacancy.

The author joined CBS’ Gale King and Charlie Rose for a seven minute interview in which they discuss Rowling’s interest in social classes and the book’s title.

The interview then turns to Harry Potter, and King points out the fans standing outside hoping to meet her. Rowling gets slightly emotional when she learns the fans love her for the themes within the magical book series. She says she has yet to come up with an adequate response to people who tell her the book series changed their lives.

Towards the end of the interview Rose asked her what she hopes for in life now. “What everyone wishes for. I wish my children grow up healthy and happy. I will be happy if I can just keep working. For me, writing is nearly everything – it’s not absolutely everything because my family is so important to me. But I need to work, I need to write.”

Tonight she’ll appear on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Central. Tomorrow, Rowling will host a live Q&A, reading, and signing all about The Casual Vacancy. Hypable staff will be present to offer a recap of the festivities!

    -Bows to Queen Jo-
No words in the dictionary can really describe the way this woman changed my life growing up. At my darkest of times as a child life meant just a little bit more when I waited in line for a new Harry Potter book. Ask any Harry Potter fan and they’ll tell you nothing can truly compare to the excitement of getting your hands on a HP book for the first time. For that, Jo, I thank you as an aspiring writer, and as a huge fan.

I just happened to be awake and ready to go to school when I saw she was going to be on. I stayed to watch it because I had the time to. When they were talking about the fans waiting outside and what they said, I got a bit emotional myself because it’s true to me and seeing her get emotional didn’t help xD

I can honestly say I am where I am right now because of Harry Potter. A lot of people say “its just a book. It can’t influence someone’s life significantly”, but with Harry Potter it really did in a major way.

She’s one of those rare people who I can’t ever be annoyed at. Not ever!!!

I was one of the six women that Gale King spoke to, we watched the interview as soon as it came online (because we were waiting for Jo to come back out while it was on) and were just sat bawling our eyes out on the streets of NYC =P

Is there any way of watching it in the UK? It isn’t saying ‘not available in your location’, but all the sites with it on seem to be not playing it- seems like a really good interview from the comments/post though :)

Aww hopefully it works for you – I’m in Australia and it managed to work for me

The part about what the potter series has done for people was touching. But the first part of the interview about the Casual Vacancy was AWFUL, though it wasn’t Jo’s fault. Charlie Rose had clearly only read the inside cover quote. He had no idea what the book was about and his questions were basically quoting the summary. I expected more from a seasoned journalist. Jon Stewart’s interview on the other hand was excellent. Makes you wonder about the who the real journalist are in this country….
