This brand new Thor: The Dark World synopsis fresh from Disney doesn’t drop any bombs about the goings-on of the upcoming Thor sequel, but it does offer some great connections to the world in which it will take place.

From what we’ve been able to glean from the leaked set videos from Thor: The Dark World, we’ve known that more otherwordly war is on the slate for the Thor sequel, and the casting of Christopher Eccelston as Malekith the Accursed has confirmed that the Dark Elves will play an integral role in the battle, but how Thor fits into the mix has been something of a mystery.

Will he foolishly start a war a la Thor or is he just stepping in to pick up the pieces? This is a question that the new synopsis from Disney does a pretty hazy job of answering, but it seems that the events from The Avengers have launched our Asgardian hero into this war with the Dark Elves. Below we’ve included the synopsis, followed by a quick analysis about what exactly they may be fighting over.

Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

The synopsis does an excellent job of assuring us that the stakes in Thor: The Dark World will be sky-high (literally), but letting the audience know that the events of The Avengers play into the war is interesting indeed. Are the Dark Elves fighting for the Tesseract that Thor has brought back to Earth? Does Thanos play some role that we aren’t aware of yet?

Thor The Dark World Infinity Gauntlet

To both answers, we say yes. To us, it seems pretty clear that the motivation behind the Dark Elves will revolve around the cosmic cube, perhaps at the advantage of a certain Mad Titan that his his eye on something else in Odin’s treasure room. In case the obvious escapes our readers, that particular item is pictured on the left.

Anyone that has seen Thor a hundred thousand times (this writer) can tell you that The Infinity Gauntlet makes a lightning-fast cameo appearance in the film, and the after-credits sequence of The Avengers convinces us that it was no accident. Thanos and this shiny glove go hand in hand, and if you’ll notice carefully, one of the gems is the awfully familiar Mind Gem that Loki uses to turn Hawkeye and Selvig into his personal flying monkeys.

If anything, the presence of these items easily tie into the overall scheme that Thanos has to acquire the glove, and getting the cosmic cube back on Asgard might be the terrific distraction he needs to gain access to Odin’s Treasure Vault. Consider this, Thanos makes a deal with the Dark Elves for the cosmic cube. In all the commotion, including (as the synopsis suggests) the inclusion of the All-Father Odin in the war, the treasure vault is left all but ungaurded, allowing the Mad Titan to step in and claim the Nintendo Power Glo- the Infinity Gauntlet for himself.

Is this whole war a power play for Thanos to claim the Infinity Gauntlet? Will the war between the Dark Elves and the Asgardians be fueled by something else? How does Jane Foster come into play? Thanks to Collider for the synopsis!

Will ‘Thor: The Dark World’ feature a play by Thanos?

I didn’t think it was possible, but this has gotten me even MORE excited for the return of the Marvel movies! I can’t wait!!

What I want to know is: will Loki play a big role?!?!?

    • Der Schattenmann

They have only mentioned that he will hold some heartfelt conversations with his mother about what he did in Avengers. But if Thanos is set to appear, I assume he might be looking to punish Loki for his failure, since he promised horrible consequences if he did not gave him the cube, and he was truly horrified with the idea…
