Want to become even more immersed in the world of The Lord of the Rings? Tolkien fans can now get their own official Hobbit currency to spend. That is, if you live in New Zealand.
In addition to minting gold coins, the New Zealand post will also be printing The Hobbit stamps with images of the actors to celebrate the soon to be released movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which you can view in the image gallery below.

Considering buying the coins? They range in value from NZ$1 to NZ$10, however, they are worth slightly more than that. The $1 coin is valued at NZ$29.90 (in US, that’s about 24.43, and if you were wondering, in Indian rupee its 1,291.5), and if you’re really feeling like splashing out, the $10 coin is worth a measly $3,695, and no, that is not the price in Indian rupee.
The images on the coins contain Bilbo (portrayed by Martin Freeman), four dwarfs, including the dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield, wizard Radagast the Brown, Lord of Rivendell Elrond and last but not least, Golllum. Safe to say they really covered all their bases, so fans should find at least one design they like. Another small addition some of the coins have are the words “Middle Earth – New Zealand” written on them, in both English and Dwarvish.
The stamps and coins don’t go on sale until November 1, just under two months before the movie is released on December 14. This is another addition by New Zealand to The Lord of the Rings franchise, along with their recent decision to change the name Wellington, New Zealand to Middle Earth for The Hobbit’s premiere, which we reported on earlier this week.
Are you planning on buying the coins? Or will you just commit entirely and move to New Zealand/Middle Earth?
