The Avengers sequel will reportedly feature the character Ms. Marvel, with Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson currently competing for the role.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are in contention for the role of Ms. Marvel in Avengers 2 and that the role is being sought after by Hollywood’s hottest actresses. Emily Blunt can been seen in the hit thriller Looper with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, while Ruth Wilson will be starring in The Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, and Helena Bonham Carter. Blunt obviously has more film titles to her name, which gives her an edge, and considering Looper is hitting it big with both the box office and critics, it may be just what she needs pick up what will be a highly coveted role.

An interesting fact about Emily Blunt: she’s been considered for multiple Marvel characters previously. She was offered the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2, which later went to Scarlett Johansson and she turned down the role of Captain America’s love interest Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger. Ruth Wilson is mostly known for her roles on television, but as mentioned earlier, she’s making her way into larger budget films such as the period piece Anna Karenina with Keira Knightley, where she plays Princess Betsy and her role as Rebecca Reid in The Lone Ranger, which released its first trailer earlier this week.

The Daily Mail reports:

“Meanwhile, British actresses Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are head-to-head in a race for the most sought-after new female role in Hollywood. Emily, 29, and Ruth, 30, are both hotly tipped to play superhero Ms. Marvel in Avengers 2, the sequel to Avengers Assemble.”

Ms. Marvel has always been an enormous fan favorite of Marvel fans and her actual name is Carol Danvers. She was caught in an explosion, in which she was seriously injured and resurfaced with superhuman abilities and then became the hero known as Ms. Marvel in her self-titled comic series back in 1977. The energy exposure from the explosion caused Danver’s genetic structure to meld with Captain Marvel’s and turns her into a human-Kree hybrid. This results in superhuman strength, endurance, stamina, flight, physical durability, a sixth sense, and she’s virtually indestructible.

Whichever actress nabs this part should be in for a substantial role in The Avengers sequel. It will be very interesting to see who ends up being cast and how she’ll be worked into what should be one incredible sequel. It’s too bad we’ll have to wait until its May 1, 2015 release date before seeing Ms. Marvel on the big screen. At least we’ll get to mull over the massive rumors until then.

While The Avengers sequel is still a ways off, these films are cast way in advance due to the size of the productions. We already know that Joss Whedon will be directing the smash hit’s sequel and that it will include the rest of the returning mega-star cast with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, and Tom Hiddleston. If the rumors are true, one of these ladies will be in for superstardom come 2015.

Let me flex my nerd muscle and point out that the bottom picture is kind of right and kind of wrong. It is a picture of Karla Sofen, who was Ms. Marvel for the extent of Marvel’s Dark Reign story line. Dark Reign was a time when all of the books were affected by a villain, Norman Osborn, being in charge of what was SHIELD. All of the Avengers essentially quit the “team”, but continued to do heroic works as as unsanctioned teams. Norman recruited other villains to take the place of various Avengers and put on the costumes, hoping to position themselves wel by acquiring trust. So, with this you had Bullseye as Hawkeye, Venom as Spiderman, Daken as Wolverine, etc. The real Ms. Marvel is a woman named Carol Danvers and Karla Sofen before and after Dark Reign was known as Moonstone.

TLDR: That is an impostor Ms. Marvel, not the character Carol Danvers that would be in the movie. (Also I am aware of how little this matters.)

    • Boobman

It actually does, because the imposter’s boobs are smaller

    • Ohmstar

I was commenting to say exactly that. Kudos on nerdity!

But her picture is just so much better than any others I found =P.

They would both bring very different aspects to the character. Blunt is probably closer to the classic Ms Marvel, but I’m not sure she kicks enough ass for a role like that. (Im sure many would disagree, but I always feel like there’s something too soft about her). Ruth Wilson is smaller and has less name appeal, but her face has a harshness that makes her so much more interesting visually. And she would make for a much more interesting portrayal, in my opinion.

The size of her bust just shouldn’t be an issue. The drawing of characters to fit fanboy desires just can’t dictate casting when illustrated proportions are so often unrealistic to begin with.

I absolutely love both Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson. Ruth is so amazing in “Luther.” But I almost see Emily beating out Ruth simply because of her list of credits. But then again, Ruth is a relative unknown in the U.S., so this could go in her favor as well.

I just hope they give a female character stand-alone movies. Marvel’s female heroes are more than capable of carrying a great movie by themselves, it’s sad to see them only as supporting characters so far.

Yvonne Strahovski needs to be cast as Ms. Marvel.

I was personally hoping for Charlize Theron, but more than anything I’m hoping if we see Ms. Marvel on screen it’ll be as Captain Marvel in her new Jamie McKelvie-designed costume.

Mostly ’cause calling her Ms. Marvel seems strange considering there isn’t a “Mr.” Marvel in the movie-verse yet and her new costume is quite possibly the best costume design I’ve ever seen.

Im a big fan of Ruth’s work on Luther, but I also really like Emily now after seeing Looper

I’m really glad they are adding another female character for the Avengers sequel! I remember thinking if I could see any new characters in the movies it would be Wasp and Ms. Marvel. I love both of them. I think Carol Danvers could be a great addition to the team.

  • Jen

Ruth Wilson is a fantastic actress. Just saying. Avengers fans would be lucky to have her :)

Emily Blunt would be a good choice!

  • sammylovegood

put them both in a blonde wig… then i’ll decide

  • alazear2

Im still trying to figure out how exactly they plan on introducing her into the MCU. Actually a beter question is will be seeing her as Ms. Marvel or as plain old Carol Dancers. In order for her to appear as Ms. Marvel you need to also introduce Mar-Vell (captain marvel) and the Kree into the MCU, something that hasnt happened yet. I suppose that they could always do the Ultimate version of the character, who is just a S.H.E.I.L.D. and not a superhero (Which works since the MCU has used a lot of the Ultimate Universe. The Chitauri only appear in the Ultimate universe for example). Basically what I’m saying is that I’m not going to believe it till I see a confirmation from marvel themselves.

    • alazear2

before anyone gets on my case for mispelling her name, I know it’s Danvers not dancers. my keyboard is being stupid.

  • http://twitter.com/BeccaPhoenix16 Rebecca Feliciano

I don’t see Emily Blunt as a superhero. That would just nbe awkard.

  • isenhobbitz

If she doesn’t get this role, I hope that Emily gets to be a Marvel character eventually. Though I think she’d be wonderful as Ms. Marvel….I think she would make a great Agent 13 as well. However, she doesn’t appear to be on the list for Agent 13, which is weird if she was up for Peggy at one point. Whoever gets this role, I’m glad that Marvel is planning to bring more estrogen into the franchise.

yvonne strahovski was made for this role the other two are a joke
