A beautiful theatrical trailer for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi has been released, and it remarkably tops the teaser trailer we saw in July.
The Life of Pi theatrical trailer opens with our first look at The Writer (Rafe Spall) and older Pi (Irrfan Khan), then flashes back to his mishap that led him to the boat and his discovery of the tiger. The rest of the trailer is a montage of various aspects in the story’s timeline.
Life of Pi also stars Gerard Depardieu as the Frenchman, Suraj Sharma as younger Pi (where the majority of the story takes place), Tabu as Pi’s mother, Adil Hussain as Pi’s father, and Shravanthi Sainath as Pi’s girlfriend. It is the story of Indian boy Pi who encounters several animals including a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and the cover-famous Bengal tiger after a shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean. If you haven’t yet read the book by Yann Martel from 2001, we highly recommend you do.
Director Ang Lee spoke to Fandango at CinemaCon earlier this year about taking on the project. “I wanted to be the one to do the impossible,” he said when addressing the question of how adapting this story was fathomable. “Call it ego, or childish, or excitement. It looks like it’s impossible. Not because it’s not visually written – it was – but it was so expensive, and it’s a philosophical book. I think that’s where people draw a line.”
He said the money made it possible to take on the project and create a 3D version. He said that, as someone who’s worked with 2D all his life, it was hard to remember he had to work in a different state of mind to make the 3D technology worthwhile. “But it’s very exciting. We’re pioneering a new cinematic language.”
Life of Pi hits theaters Nov 21.
