The first J.K. Rowling interview for her upcoming novel The Casual Vacancy has been released by The Guardian. The author talks about her new book, Fifty Shades, and what’s in the future.
The article, which has appeared on The Guardian, is extremely lengthy in text, including a surprising amount of summarization regarding The Casual Vacancy, so you have been warned. In terms of actual content, there is a nice video of the interview featuring a fast moving Q&A.
Take a look at the video below, which is a great round-up of the article’s highlights.
Here’s a highlight from the article, which can be read in full on The Guardian website:
“Obviously I need to be in some form of vehicle to have a decent idea,” she [J.K. Rowling] laughs. Having dreamed up Potter on a train, “This time I was on a plane. And I thought: local election! And I just knew. I had that totally physical response you get to an idea that you know will work. It’s a rush of adrenaline, it’s chemical. I had it with Harry Potter and I had it with this. So that’s how I know.”
While there is obviously quite a lot of talk regarding The Casual Vacancy, to which Rowling says “the worst that can happen is that everyone says, ‘That’s shockingly bad.'” There is also a refreshing amount of honest insight into her world, which makes the interview that much more interesting.
One of our favorite parts comes early in the video interview (above) where Rowling talks Fifty Shades of Grey. She reveals she hasn’t read it because she jokingly swore to her editor she wouldn’t.
And what about that political fairytale we’ve known has been in the works for so long? Rowling confirms it’s on her computer and nearing completion, but she’s got another children’s book that she thinks may be published first.
We earlier reported that another J.K. Rowling interview with ABC is set for a release September 27, the day the novel is released. We’ll be sure to have coverage from all the interviews as we approach the release date.
