Pacific Rim will be getting the post-conversion 3D treatment, as Warner Bros. is going against director Guillermo del Toro’s wishes not to release the monsters-versus-robots epic in the format.
Back in July, Del Toro said in an interview with Collider that he wasn’t going to release the film in 3D because the monsters and robots were too big. Apparently Warner Bros. isn’t having any of that, as they seem to be pushing the post-conversion anyway.
This according to Variety, who note that Del Toro has never released a 3D film but, “in the end, the prospect of the 3D upcharge — especially overseas — was likely too much for Warners to resist.”
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes –a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)– who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Whether you like the format or not, opinions on post-conversion vs. shooting with 3D cameras are pretty unanimous – post-conversion just doesn’t hold up. It would have been nice if Warners had made up their minds sooner and just funded the project with the capabilities to shoot in 3D. Post-conversion costs around $5 million on a typical film, so it clearly is a economical no-brainer. That said, so is just shooting in 3D, look at Avatar.
Pacific Rim, which is slated for a July 12, 2013, will release in both 3D and 2D formats. Warner Bros. does not anticipate any issues with converting the film in time for the July release date.
